Hi I am trying to lose at least 120pds. It seems like I just can't win. Could it be my hypo-thyroid problem? My doctors says that if your on medication, then u should be able to lose the weight. However, I've been told by other folks, that they have trouble losing weight due to their thyroids. If anyone have lost weight while having hypo-thyroids, please tell me how did you do it? Others, can you please just give me any ideas to boost my weight lost. Can guys give me some pointers. I am so lost and I feel like I am doing this for nothing. I just don't understand.:brokenheart:   Thank you

can you open your food diary so we can give some good advice?
do you track everything, are you consistent, and do you measure/weigh your food?
do you exercise? if so, what do you do?0 -
Can't really help without knowing your weight, your daily calorie intake, your activity and exercise levels, and your macronutrient(protein, fat, carbs) goals0

Protein and fat goals both seem very low. Hard to tell without knowing your weight.0 -
aside from the days where you didnt log at all, either you didnt log everything u ate or your calories are way too low for weight loss and long term sustainability.
dont be afraid of food. find out your BMR- http://iifym.com/bmr-calculator/ , and at the very least, eat that. this is what your body needs per day if you laid in bed all day. dont be afraid of food! your body needs a certain amount to function properly, and you must fuel it. a lot of us focus on the TDEE-20% (calculator also found on that page)- it may seem high after years of thinking we need 1200 calories, but its what works.
also- make it a point to eat more fats and protein-- those are the areas often lacking in your dairy totals. carbs are easier to eat, but protein and fat aid weight loss
log everything accurately. everything. weigh your food if possible. and exercise. do all of things honestly, dont starve yourself, and the weight WILL come off0 -
I think you need to be more consistent....I am also on thyroid meds as long as you take them and the dose is correct you can lose weight ..if your following a proper diet that works for you. But in June I didn't see any tracking for your diary I only looked at a few weeks..and July seemed like some high sodium choices from time to time which will make it harder for you... make a plan and just stick with it for two months firm and then see how your results are without any slip ups. ....that will be a better judge to see if things are going well.....good luck0

^^ This!
I'd definitely say change your goals: Double-check your calorie intake, up your HEALTHY fat and protein intake, lower your carb intake, even just a little. Try to get carbohydrates from vegetables and fruits and stick with whole grains.
Challenge yourself to reach your protein intake and to stay under your carb goal instead of focusing only on calories.0 -
I've been hypothyroid for 14 years. When I purposefully try to lose weight I do. I find that I need 3 things: eating right (whether it by MFP, Weight Watchers), water, and exercise 3 days a week. Once I stop...the weight loss stops.
I started about 30 days ago...lost 5 lbs. About 2 years ago, I weight 30 pounds more.
It isn't impossible, just slower. Does that make sense?0 -
I posted the bit below on a thread about thyroid the other day. Hypothyroid is not a reason not to lose weight unless your thyroid and lifestyle are unbalanced. It can make it harder to push through barriers but it's doable. I've done it twice.....
if you're looking for thyroid management.... here ya go:
- DO NOT supplement until your meds are okay as it will screw with your testing a bit
- kelp and pretty much all seaweed. Nori (the one on sushi), aonori (powdered nori), wakame, konbu in soup stock. Theres a reason that thyroid conditions don't exist in Japan and that reason is called IODINE! Seaweed is full of it. Eat it, it's yum
- coconut oil - this can be used instead of any other cooking oil and instead of butter. Tastes fine, and is a natural thyroid support like the kelp
- if something makes you feel gross, cut it. Too much garlic screws with me. I'm allergic to seaweed too.
- get muscle tested. A naturopath will soon be able to find out what, if anything, is lacking. Magnesium, Kelp, tissue salts, EPO, St John's Wort...just some of the things that can help with symptoms.
- ignore the 'thyroid patients must/can't eat' charts and do your own experimentation. Cutting coffee might work for some, but if I cut coffee I get lethargic. The minor lift from coffee in the morning helps me more than the thyroid effect stops me.
- eat well. Eat veges. Eat fruit. Eat lean meat. Eat rice and pasta. If you're not eating well, then your body is having to overcome that as well. Treat yourself too, but try for 5+ a day fruit and veg, and smarter choices a few times a day - then have the damn wine/choc/ etc.
- find your mood points and learn to work with them. I know when i'm getting down, and thyroid chicas are way more prone to this - so I have my never-fail pick me ups.
- de-stress. Stress + thyroid = not good.
- find a doc who trusts you to know your own body. Negotiate your meds up until you feel 'normal'. I take about 40% more than I was initially prescribed, and my doc is fine with that after seeing my results. Do not do this without your doctors approval or cooperation. If they won't tell you why they won't cooperate, get a new doctor.
- if you feel your meds aren't working, ask to try a different brand. Goldshield don't work for me, eltroxin are gold. Everyone is different. Be in tune with your body.
If I think of any more I'll add, but this is what I've learned - and why my thyroid behaves now0 -
i dont have a thyroid problem
but i have always strugeeled with weight lost n whenever i lost some i will gain it again
but what has worked for me for the past year
is focusing on what i eat not how much i eat
n made my goal is to eat right n to nurture my body
when i first started mfp
all what i cared about was the calories intake
i would eat a pizza all the day as long it is on my calories limit
i did lose weight but gained again
same with diet food
n i wasnt feeling well at all
a few months ago i started to read more about nutrients n how u can cure your body with just eating right
n made that my ultimate goal n the second goal is to lose fat not weight i just wanna lower my fat percentage n build more muscle
though i still eat my kitkat almost daily! but not as a meal n not when i am hungry
usually after a healthy meal
so what I recommend is just eating as healthy as u can n healthy food is what u r sure is healthy not what is marketed as one ( whole wheat, fruits, vegetables ,nuts, lean meats , healthy fats like oils n avocado but nothing that is sold as diet food or healthy chips )
2- also eating 5 meals per day helps keeping your body burning the fat all day long n boost your metabolism
3- try to be active during your day if u can join a gym it is great but if u dont feel like so dont go until u really want to
4- dont stress about the weight as long u r being healthy n doing it the right way
it will come off eventually0 -
I didn't look too far back in your diary, but one thing that stuck out was how much you eat fast food. Try to cut down on that to maybe once a week or so. There's a lot of 'empty' calories and stuff that's bad for you in fast food. Eat more home cooked foods. I pack my lunches when i go to work, with lots of snacks so i'm not tempted to eat stuff that i shouldn't be. Usually stuff like cucumbers, nuts, and fruits. T0
