Best: Calories in, calories out. The more nutritious the calories, the better health benefits, but weight loss is still calories in, calories out.
Worst (and this will cause some flags or haters): All adult humans must eat a minimum of 1200 calories a day, or they will lose muscle/go into starvation mode (yeah, right) / fade away and die a slow and painful death. One size does NOT fit all - we're all individuals of varying age/sex/race/weight/health/activity level, and a food plan can be customized to that individual.5 -
Worst - yeah the 1200 cal thing
Also you need grain carbs to be healthy. Wholegrain is better than white. Nah, dont buy it. I get more than enough fibre from veg.3 -
Best: "Losing weight would really help your sleep apnea. I also suggest lifting weights. It will make a big difference."
That was from the sleep lab technician when I had a sleep study done. A year later I went back to get the equipment to do a home sleep study, which was a follow up to see if my apnea had improved at all. The same guy was there and I said something like "oh, it's you again. I remember you from last time."
Him: I don't remember you at all. I always remember people when they come back.
Me: Well, I've lost over 50 pounds. I look a little different.
Him: Really? What did you do? How did you lose weight?
Me: I started eating better and exercising and lifting weights. Actually, I'll say thank you because you specifically told me to lift weights and it has made a huge difference. [pull up a "before" picture on my phone]
Him: [big eyes] Uh, yeah. I sure wish my wife would listen to me. She is afraid of lifting. Keep it up!
Worst: "Don't eat more than a cup of strawberries per day as you'll get fat." [This was from a coworker.]9 -
Best: "Go low carb and eat everything cooked." -From my acupuncturist. After years of meds and troubleshooting with diet, I finally found something that works.
Worst: "diet has no impact on your health." - My GI doctor.3 -
Pretty much any health advice I get outside of my Dr. and my Coach/trainer is the worst health advice...people are idiots.3

Worst: Eat 1200 calories a day
Best: Follow macros and eat more than 1200 calories a day1 -
my favourite was the friend who told me not to lift because it would boost my testosterone and my hair would fall out. because menopause.
i'm very very very fond of this friend. so i don't want people laughing at her, and there might actually be some thread of theoretical-possibility truth to it for all i know. i said i would keep her posted.2 -
Wow, it seems women specifically get the phrase, "don't do XYZ or you'll get fat". Men get a million different 'bro-science' suggestions.
Best: Don't believe anyone that gives you nutrition or fitness advice. Go out and do your own research. Read the studies yourself and make up your own mind.
Worst #1: "Dude, you gotta round your back to engage the lower back when you do DL" - gym bro
Worst #2: "What do you mean a slow clean bulk? Dude, you're so anabolic after lifting that you should just hit ABC-fastfood-place and order as much as you can eat. You won't get fat at all, It will all go right to your muscle!" - another gym bro.1 -

Someone legit told me that one time. Like, no, I like my daily pre-gym banana. F off.0 -
Best - increase my protein macro
Worst - "Don't work out when pregnant " , wish I knew better at the time to ignore that one0 -

Best: Eat a high protein breakfast or drink a protein shake with breakfast to kick start your protein for the day
Worst: Eat low carb to lose fat. You can add the Coconut Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea Extract, etc. to that.

I can't pinpoint the best but the worse advice is when my doctor told me I needed to change my diet due to high BP and Cholesterol.....I sat there for a minute and finally asked: "change to what". He recommended google. That's when I suggested he give me the name of a respectable dietician.2

Best: Fat won’t make you fat
Worst: The fat you eat is the fat you wear
That worst advice fueled my ED so that I didn’t eat any fat for almost a year. I cried when I ate an avocado when starting recovery. The reason I ate an avocado was because my nutritionist told me that best advice (after telling me my heart could fail if I didn’t start eating fat while running 60 miles a week).2 -
Best: one burger doesn't make you fat, just like one salad doesn't make you skinny
Worst: anything unsolicited from someone at the gym1 -
Best - allow yourself 100 calories a day that you don't have to answer to anyone for--not even yourself.
Worst - from a Dr.," doesn't matter what you eat, you've always been fat, you will always be fat, now about that cosmetic surgery--"4 -
Best advice: Ditch the scale! The bane of my life when my weight loss stagnated. Instead measure how your body shape changes and your fitness level.
Worst advice: cut out all carbs.0 -
Best-eat the right amount of calories that your body needs
Worst- how eating toilet roll makes you feel fuller3 -
Best advice: It's ok to eat whatever you like to eat, you can lose weight anyway.
Worst: Eating carbs is dangerous, not only will it make you fat forever, you'll get all kinds of illnesses. Led to me ditching carbs and actually getting sick because of it!
And also the "bananas/bread/potatoes/whatever will make you fat"-advice..0 -
Best advice was on a forum here. I read something like "Food is fuel that the body needs. Treat it that way"
Worst advice? I can't remember what they are called but remember those stupid rounded shoes? Someone told me those would give me a nice firm butt. I did not fall for it like she did.0 -
Best advice: Start lifting immediately, especially when in a deficit to preserve muscle mass and lose more fat.
Worst advice: Drink apple cider vinegar to lose weight, cut carbs to lose weight, calories don't matter. The list is endless and stupid.0 -
Best: Get a dietitian
Worst: Fasted cardio. That’s self-harm when you’re diabetic and dehydrate as easily as I am/do.0 -
Best: moderation
Worst: calorie counting is obsessive and won’t change anything0
