Eat in a calorie deficit. Log all your foods accurately, including using a food scale if need be. A year might be a stretch, but you should still lose a great deal of weight.2

The beauty of myfitnesspal is you can eat whatever you want, just keep your calories within your daily calorie goal. Just use the app as it is designed to be used! Input your stats & goals and then start measuring & weighing & logging all your food. You'll quickly learn to adjust your portions or eating habits so that you stay within your calories, most likely without having to drastically change your diet.
The only perimeter for food is I would encourage you to get enough protein since it is important for preserving muscle while in a caloric deficit and especially since you're lifting weights. Whey protein powder is an affordable convenient safe way to get in more protein. It's especially great post workout. It's a lot cheaper than steak and also more quickly digested & utilized by your body.1 -
Anyone can lose weight if they log the big three regularly. (I'd advise daily logging)
• Calories
• Activity
• Weight
Just eat whatever you are used to eating, but less of it. You will find protein is nice and filling but eggs, pulses and chicken just as good (and cheaper) than steak.
Try to incorporate walking, cycling or other non-gym activity into your everyday normal life (it's easier to keep them going)
As time goes by you'll find your appetite will change.
Try and avoid any food with the words, 'low fat, low salt, or low sugar' on the label - they are almost all a con. In fact try and avoid foods with any labels on them, or which come in boxes. Eating fresh food and cooking for yourself and your family is certainly one of my secrets of success.

You are in luck. In a year you could lose the weight you want to! The only thing you need is a calorie deficit. Set your MFP up with your current weight, your weight loss goal (as you are significantly overweight go for 2lbs/week) and then just eat whatever you fancy whilst staying at your goal.
The crucial part is to weigh all food on a set of scales and log them accurately and consistently.1
