Juicing: yea or nay?

Found my dads old Juiceman II in storage, cleaned it up and am wondering if I should keep it or sell it.

Have a Vitamix already, so, not sure I would benefit from a juicer in addition. Thoughts?

My dietitian insisted that chewing is better. It keeps you aware how much you are eating.

As an experiment, juice five oranges, and calculate how many calories that is. Time how long it takes you to down it. Compare that to the calories in a single orange, and time how long it takes you to eat that.

I loooove fresh juices, as an occasional treat. Carrot, oranges, grapefruit, pineapple. Green ones too. So many good combos. But yeah chewing is better and fiber and all that- but fresh juice is da bomb. IMO.

I say it depends on your goals. Blending is better in general since you keep the fiber in your fruits/veggies, but if your goal is better nutrition, juicing is AWESOME. For example, eating a couple of beets, a bunch of carrots, & a big bunch of kale in one sitting is not something I'm going to do. But I can juice it all & drink it in a day so I get the nutrients from it without being too full to eat other stuff.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. I think I would rarely juice fruit, diabetes runs in the family, so the thought of excess fructose without fiber unnerves me. Maybe fresh grapefruit juice as a treat. I do generally accept CICO point blank so chewing would be more desirable for calorie input, and I'm not lacking any nutrients; but I do have RA and osteoarthritis, so maybe it would be a way to incorporate more anti inflammatory raw produce into my diet (I tend to cook my veggies).

Maybe I'll just try it for a few weeks and see if there's benefit over using the Vitamix for similar drinks, which I don't use nearly enough, but because I don't like soupy gloppy drinks

Ditto what everybody else already wrote. Keep in mind that most inexpensive juicers--like the Juiceman--aren't producing a completely fiber-free result. Unless you run it through another filter/strainer to clarify it, you are still getting some fiber.

If you stick with lower calorie veggies, such as carrots and spinach, you're going to get a lot of micro-nutrients and typically at a rate of under 100 calories per cup.

With all that said, I have a juicer and mainly use it for variety/treats and not a regular part of my diet.

    Vitamix rules, Juicer drools. :)

I love my Vitamix - protein smoothies, veggie and fruit smoothies, crushed ice margaritas, hot homemade soups from scratch, etc., etc., etc.

    bon appétit!

Not in favor of juicing. I'm too much of a fan of fiber.

I'm dreaming of the day we can afford a Vitamix.

I bought a juicer once and used it for awhile but then stopped using it and put it in storage until I finally got rid of it. Same thing applies to a lot of other appliances.

    Sell it.

I love homemade juice, but only to add to the food I already eat. Juice is a rare treat for me because the excess fructose gives me digestive upset.

Does the juice machine have sentimental value to you? If so, you might want to keep it, or you could give it to someone you like who will use it.

Or, if no sentimental value, you could donate it to a thrift store.

I prefer smoothies myself as you drink everything you add including the fibre. I add lots of different types of fruit and veggies.

The man loves his Vitamix, which he's had for years. I understand you can make soup in it.

You can make soups, smoothies etc in a normal food processor, it doesn't have to be a Vitamix :) I have a normal food processor that cost me about £30 and it's just as good.

I love juicing. I do it more for fast nutrition though rather than weightloss after years of a crappy diet I'm thinking my body needs some nutrients lol. So easy to get a bunch of nutrients from fruit and veggies from juicing. Smoothies are also awesome though.

Nay for me. Nothing wrong with it if you like it, but it's not my thing. Other than the occasional can of V8 the only juice I drink is in mimosas.

Nay for me. I like to chew my food. Juicing is a lot of calories for a small taste of food..in my opinion.

But if you blitz a soup in a food processor for long enough to heat it, you'll end up with a smoking motor. A Vitamix can blend and heat the soup.

I have a Vitamix, but I have to say - making soup is the last thing I do in it. My soups are usually chunky, not smooth.

    IMO not worth it...
