Does anyone have advice on how to over come or prevent yourself from having a plateau?

A plateau is 6 weeks or more of no weight movement IF (and that's a big IF) one has been consistent. That means if anytime they do something different from that consistency (say eat some extra fruit or have a "cheat day") that it can't be deemed a plateau.
So be consistent, adjust calories for weight loss and be honest with yourself.

How long has it been since you lost? How are you measuring your intake? The best way to prevent a plateau is to make sure your logging is as accurate as possible.2
