In my experience, squats can help your leg press numbers go up but the leg press does not help your squat numbers much, if at all.

The squat is a full-body exercise, as others have said.
The strength from squats is more usable in day-to-day activities.
How often do you sit on your butt in a chair and push with your legs?
Maybe the gas pedal, but that brings a whole new meaning to "lead foot".

The leg press might make your legs LOOK bigger but squats will make your legs, back, etc. demonstrably stronger.

That is from a fighter's point of view, anyway.

    * I've never considered the carryover to deadlifts. I would still deadlift in place of leg presses because I want the grip strength as well.

If you find leg press too easy add some resistance bands....or just do it anyway if you want to set ur quads on fire

Completely agree. Heavy leg presses shouldn't take the place of deadlifts. I've personally seen my deadlift go up since I've consistently been doing super heavy (for me) leg presses.

Is there a benefit to doing the leg press? I've been doing it on hypertrophy days kind of as a toss in (hanging head in shame - I subbed them for barbell lunges because i loathe lunges....).
Maybe I am wasting my time?

I don't do barbell squats do to back issues. So, I rely on the leg press. I do lunges and split squats as well.

I always felt as though split squats put a greater emphasis on my back compared to regular high bars

I do them on the Smith Machine.

For what it is worth, I highly recommend the SS Yoke Bar for squats.
Expensive as all get out, but it was a worthwhile investment.

I am more confident, since I don't worry about losing a heavy set, it saves my shoulders and my back definitely appreciates it. The leverage is ...different. Sort of between low bar and high bar, maybe.

I know I will not go back to a straight bar squat if I can help it.
