Desk cycle recommendations?

I am mostly a walker/jogger turning runner, but the majority of my chance to do so is outside in the mornings with a stroller. It is eventually going to be too cold, at least for a little while, for me to take the lad out walking/jogging. So I need another option, my PT recommended a bike for cross training anyway, but I was wondering if I might be able to get by with a desk pedal kind of device. I have only used one briefly and when I did so I was in terrible shape so I have no idea how it might work for my fitter body and wondered if people here might have some insight. My biggest concern is whether it would be able to have sufficient resistance for me to even get my heart rate up enough for the pedaling to be cardiovascular. I am hoping that it would really only be fill in for days when I need to rest my legs or needed something I could do while reading stories or just watching him free-play or whatever.
