Need some support

Hi everybody,

I am finding myself discouraged and needing support/motivation. I got married last May, weighing in at 120 (I'm 5'3"and 32 years old). I very quickly put on 20lbs, and over the next years an additional 10. Right now I am 148! This is the highest weight I have ever been. I usually start to make some efforts when I hit 130, so you can imagine right now I am feeling super low. I am also coming off a knee injury and have JUST been cleared to go back to the gym. I usually workout 5 times a week (Pilates and circuit training classes) I have also been cooking Paleo for my husband, who was already in great shape, and he is now in the best shape of his life and is at his lowest weight. This just adds to the pressure and my negative self-image.

My biggest problem was (sneaky) snacking when he was not around. I seem to have gotten over this hurdle, but now it seems like I am gaining and losing the same three lbs each week. I can easily lose a few lbs, but then we have family/friend parties every week. When I go I eat without abandon and wake up to an upsetting 2-3 lb weight gain. This is also infuriating because my husband does the same thing with zero repercussions on the scale. With the holidays around the corner I am nervous that this weight will never budge. To add insult to injury I only have a handful of dresses that fit and no pants. I refuse to buy clothes at this weight when I don't want to be at it long.

Please help give me some feedback an support!

Shannon

Hi Shannon,I also have the same problem. It is very hard to stay motivated. I keep on overeating especially desserts. We can motivate each other.

Thanks Minnaramraj!!! I worked out last night, ate well most of the day, but had a mid day candy binge. I consumed about 10 bite sized candy bars :( And when I woke up this morning I was down 1/2 a lb. The crazy thing is, I was so upset. I feel like my weight is so far above my norm that it should be dropping rapidly. Not sure why I think those binges won't make a difference! Today I'm going to try to eat EXACTLY what I put in MFP to show myself that it makes a difference.

I wouldn't worry about 3lbs or so. I fluctuate that much almost every day.

What's good is you're asking for support, which there's plenty of here, and soon you'll take some of the suggestions to heart and get to work.

Look at it this way - it's probably not going to get any easier by waiting, so take the plunge, find healthy food alternatives and someone to support you and help you stay accountable. From your description of your husband, he may be the perfect candidate for that. :)

    Best wishes

    Hi, Shannon!

First of all, congrats on being cleared to go back to the gym! That's really awesome! Also, it's really great that you and your husband are doing Paleo. Way to go with replacing bad choices with good ones!

My husband (who sounds similar to yours metabolically) has always been super skinny, I'm pretty sure he couldn't gain weight if it killed him. He eats however he likes and enjoys his food heartily. After we got married, I started following his habits and packed on the pounds, which, like what you were talking about, just made me feel worse.

All of this to say, what you probably need to tussle with is the fact that you and your husband are two different people with two different metabolisms, and that's okay. He shouldn't judge you for your weight gain (after all, you are doing nothing worse than him), so you shouldn't judge yourself either. That kind of guilt just slows down the process.

I'm really glad that you are going tonlog all of your food today! That really does make a difference. I would urge you to log EVERYTHING, even if you eat something you regret, as it will help you gain data to see precisely where you are and also will provide motivation against binging as you get into the habit.

    You can do it!

Hi Shannon! Just remember it is about progress NOT PERFECTION!!! Take ONE day at a time! You just need to aim to be better than you were yesterday and guess what if you have a bad day, tomorrow is a brand new day where you start again! We are here to support you and YOU CAN DO IT!
