Is it really "just one day"?

Thanks, Christine... I don't think I've sent messages to people who are not on my list before, so I wasn't aware it might be an issue! Hopefully this will work.0

It's math. 3500 calories for one pound. If you eat sensibly the whole week and overdo it one day (as long as you're still reasonable), you can easily make up for it so at least you don't gain weight.
My main issue with the 'it's only one day' thing is that really, it's not one day. Meal preparation, office parties, leftovers... it's easy to make it a month or two...0 -
thats why i dont do "cheat" days. I might do a cheat snack or a cheat meal, but not all day. Its too easy to fall into old habits and too hard to catch up1

I usually enjoy special occasions guilt-free by getting in extra exercise.

For me personally, it's the exact opposite. If I don't normalize all foods, regardless of calories, and if I don't incorporate them somehow into my diet when I feel like having them, it's too easy for me to be too aware that I'm on a diet. By "too aware" I mean having it feel like a special phase with special sacrifices rather than normal life with common sense sacrifices. Eating high calories sometimes doesn't feel like a distinct special eating pattern that is too far removed from my usual eating habits, so I bounce back immediately like it's just how my eating now works, no special effort or motivation needed.7 -

Ditto. I just average out my calories for the week. I'm maintaining though... the year I was losing, I was much more careful on Holidays.1 -
This staying on track is new for me, as in the past when I would indulge for one day, it totally threw me off track and then I spiraled downward. So while I plan to eat thanksgiving, as that is my favorite I will stay within my calorie count. I love turkey leftovers so I will enjoy some more turkey but I can easily add that into my meal plan. I will skip the stuffing, gravy and the rest. Right now I feel confident in doing that. For the rest of the year I won't indulge until I am at goal and then I plan to maintain my calorie count and keep logging. I've been on this journey too many times in my life, I know know my trigger foods so I plan to stay away from them. I'm also in my 60's now so I feel it is even more important to try and stay healthy.0

I count myself lucky then, because for me 'it's only one day' is indeed accurate. Meal preparation: I make one or two sides for the gathering at my friend's house (family lives on other side of country and I can't make it), Office Parties: I don't work were office parties are a thing, Leftovers: I celebrate over at a friends house and take home little to no leftovers. It may not be just one day for a lot of people out there, but it is indeed just one day for plenty of others. Again, I'll count myself lucky while it lasts.1
