I had both of my lower wisdom teeth removed this morning, one was impacted and needed to be cut into... I run 4-6 miles a day. I really want to run but I'm worried about causing damage.

Does anyone know if it's ok to go for a run, lift, or use machines same day? It's been a few hours. I'm going stir crazy

Personally, I wouldn't... but suggest calling the dentist if it bothers you that much.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they did 1 side at a time. All were impacted, tight against the other teeth, and 1 of them had to be cut even deeper than the others and brought out sideways. Had anesthesia during (shot in gums and IV drugs) and was groggy afterwards. Had prescription antibiotics and pain killers afterwards. I wasn't fit at the time, but if I did the same thing again today, I would not have run for 2 days.

i expect it would throb like crazy. and maybe bleed, but you can always stop if things don't feel quite right, so i don't imagine you'll die of it.

if you were anaesthetized, i know i'd stay away from heavy machinery for a while. but then i'm a world-class klutz even when i'm not drugged so ymmv about that one as well.

No, I don't think any of those are ok the same day, maybe even a couple of days. What do you do on a normal day when you're not working out?

No, you should probably wait at least a week. Exercise increases your risk for dry sockets.

You do understand that it's ok to rest and let your body heal right? As usmcmp stated, you increase your risk of dry sockets...and that's not fun. Rest and heal...don't be silly.

^ thanks for the responses. Was in a lot of pain today even with prescribed meds. Just going to see how I feel tomorrow.. if not next day. It's not about filling my day it's about my body feeling like it need to be more active.
    Thanks again everyone :)

please don't just see how you feel. even if you feel much better, you can cause stitches tearing, bleeding and the agonizingly painful dry sockets. also you lost a fair amount of blood and went through physical trauma, and your body NEEDS to heal.

you should really ask your dentist. when i had my last extraction, the dentist wanted ne to wait a week before exercising, then after he saw me he approved me for light exercise for another week, and specifically said no running or heavy lifting. that's in line with what three other dentists told me.

This makes more sense, I sure was in no shape to even get out of bed for a few days! You'll be feeling better soon, but start off with some walking & lighter stuff.

I think you should look at it this way:

Either you take some time off now OR you risk causing a serious complication (or peripheral injury due to the medication) in which you are forced to take months off.

Glad to hear you did not run. Consider the next 3-4 days as rest - taper before an event. Its 20-30 years since I had my wisdoms ( all 3 ?? WTF 4? ) pulled and I spent 2 days on the sofa and a full week before I did anything physical. As others have said the risk of infection-dry socket etc is just not worth the Fitness - Stir crazy reward.

As a runner we spend so much time unconsciously breathing through our mouth and this increases the risk of dry socket dramatically.

I have had some major dental work in the last year (extraction of a broken molar that needed cutting into and an implant placement)
My dental surgeons and dentists basically told me to avoid cardio until I felt the would was healed enough. Simply put to avoid too much blood in the gums, which would keep the wound open longer than needed. In my case that meant no strenuous exercise for at least 4 days. In case of the implant it was longer but that was dueto me feeling crap with the antibiotics.
A long walk was fine though and I did walk a lot when I could not go to the gym

No, don't run. When I had my wisdom tooth extracted the dentist recommended AT LEAST 3 days without any strenuous activity. I think I ended up taking about a week before I was feeling well enough to work out. You need at least a couple days to recover.
