For weight loss, calories matter.
For body fat, macros may also help along with calories.
For general health, micros, macros, sleep, mental health, etc. may also help along with calories.
"The right foods" are largely dependent on personal goals and preferences and will vary greatly from person to person.3 -

Losing weight and body composition are two different things.
Higher quality food = higher quality weight loss.
So, prioritizing whole foods 70% of the time or more will give you better results in the long run.0 -
A calorie deficit is all that matters to weight loss. That isn't to say eat nothing but pizza, cookies, and soda all day every day. Nutrition is still important for your body.2

For weight loss eating at the correct calorie deficit for your weight loss goals is the only thing that matters.1

Body composition is 98% energy balance and training plan.1

Calories in and calories out is all that matters.1

You're likely to have an easier time of things focusing on whole food nutrition...it's not impossible to overeat, but it's more difficult as you will tend to be more satiated. The majority of my diet is whole foods/minimally processed foods...but I also still have "treats" and whatnot....I just don't let that kind of stuff make up a substantial part of my diet.
I would also say that the vast majority that say "I eat what I want and hit my calorie targets" do similar...those people aren't suggesting that you should have a diet consisting largely of junk food...they're saying that "junk food" can be a part of an otherwise healthy and balanced diet...
Also, it depends on what you mean by "right foods"...3
