Which Scale Should I Trust?

I have a digital scale and an analogue scale.

I've had the analogue scale for a few months, it's says I'm 150 lbs.

I got the digital scale last night. It says I'm 145 lbs.

I always weigh first thing in the morning before I've had anything to eat or drink. The analogue scale says my boyfriend is 205, but the digital scale says 196. Which weight should we go with??? I don't want to get all excited about being at a lower weight if that's a scale error.

I would say it doesn't matter. Pick one and stick with it so you're being consistent with which one you use. If you'd like to check for accuracy, try weighing something you are certain about on each one and see which is most correct. For example maybe weigh a 5 pound bag of flour. :)

I wrote an article on this once:

Modern digital bathroom scales are factory set to be within 2 lbs. accuracy.

Analog scales have internal components that can get moved off-kilter if the scale is tipped or banged or if it's not on a hard, level surface. They also get dust in between parts pretty quickly meaning nothing is functioning at best capacity.

    I'd go with the digital.

pick one and use that one and watch the trend. In general, a digital scale is going to be more accurate, though likely not 100% accurate. The actual number doesn't matter...the overall trend is what matters.

Put a 5 lb weight on each one, see what you come up with.

Thank you so much everyone! I'm going to go with the digital scale and just use that one consistently.

@USAMcK I love that you wrote a paper on this. It's really good to know that digital scales are set to be within 2lbs of accuracy.

    Have a great day guys!
