I'm walking the 5k part of a marathon the weekend after my birthday in January. I've done 5ks and 10ks but they were specifically one or the other not sure how this works. Can anybody enlighten me? Starting to get excited!

Congrats! You will need to find out how the event is set up. The ones I've done have had different start times for each race, so the marathoners start first because the event takes much longer. One race is a one way race so each event has different starting points and everyone ends at the same place. The participants from the different events are all intermingled by the end. Another one is an out and back, so everyone starts and ends at the same place, but the courses are different. It's a lot of fun participating with so many types of runners and walkers.

The website for the event should tell you what your course is and what the timing is for the different events. In some cases, the 5k is the day before the marathon.

Just be careful to stay on your route. I did a 5k over the summer that also had a 10k. The 10k started a little earlier and had some of the same route. Somehow my friend and I did a small portion of the 10k route on accident so our 5k was about a half mile longer than it should have been! Lol! Luckily I didn't care about my time or anything. It was funny. My next race I did that had a 1/2 marathon with the 5k was more clear on the route - no getting lost. Lol.
