Hi everyone :)

So someone suggested me to use a weight trend app, which totally made sense to me and I like it a lot so far. It provides you with not only the line representing the actual trend of your weight loss, but also the line for your projected weight loss according to the settings you customize when you first use it (such as SW, CW, GW, goal date according to your weight loss rate), if I am correct.

Have any of you experience it to be pretty accurate? Do you find that your weight loss does really average to your projected weight loss rate? I am just intrigued by the whole concept and I would be really interested in hearing your opinions on it.

Thanks ahead :)

I use Trendweight and the weight lost per week trend is pretty reliable. It won't mess with my trend if I have an odd weigh-in, but it will average out major changes after about four days or so of consistency. For example I had been losing a little over three pounds a week and Trendweight agreed. For over a week now I've been eating about 500 calories more than before and my loss trend has changed to two pounds a week. The trending weight is always a few pounds over what I weigh, which is kinda weird, like it's telling me my weight last week.

How long have you used it for?

I maintained my weight for like 2 weeks, and it pushed my projected completion to like 2021 haha. Once my weight loss was back on track it adjusted back to sometime next year. :) I don't rely on it too much. As long as the trend is down, I'm happy.

I use it for the trendline.. as long as it's going in the direction I want I am happy (in my case, up). However the projected goal date thing drives me nuts.. once it said I would reach my goal by 2219. I'm like.. well.. that is reassuring :D

I use Libra to reassure myself that even if my weight is fluctuating wildly, or seems to stall for three weeks, my trendline is still pointing down. My "projected completion date" has been all over 2017 and 2018, I don't set too much store by it!

Thanks for your reply! That's basically what I got it for. I am going the ''slow and steady'' route this time around so I thought it would help me stay patient while seeing the trend going down even when my weight seems not to be moving. Not the case just yet as I just started and most of what I am losing is probably water weight but I know that soon everything will slow down and I am hoping that keeping in mind the bigger picture will help keep me motivated :)

Charts that show a trending line can help visualize that one or a few days of higher than previously recorded data points may not really be as bad as they seem.

Here is my TrendWeight chart, where I noted how many days it could appear that I was at a "stall," but I really wasn't, it was just a normal recovery from a particularly low weigh-in. If you are recording weight weekly, it would sometimes appear that the weight loss has slowed down or it has stopped, when in actuality, the general trend is downward.

How often do you weight in?

Daily for the last 3+ years.

Daily gives the most information. Having the most information lets the program make a better guess as to your actual past trend.

Future trend is a similar projection to the projection you see from MFP.
it is an essentially meaningless construct.

It says "if every day in the future was like every day this past <insert number of days each program uses>, then at future date Z this will happen".

Sounds wonderful. Except that your intake, calories spent and body will NOT stay constant between today and Z. Even if you do not consciously try to vary them.

    So... whatever.

Note that Libra/happy scale I believe give you the ability to tweak how many past days are taken into account. Trendweight doesn't.

    These programs are not magic.
All they are doing is reducing the impact of a single measurement and increasing the impact of a multitude of measurements.
Sort of like.... reality. Which is that if we were at a magical weight ONE time in the past 30 days... we probably actually weighed a bit more than that MOST of the time!

Yeah, I ignore the projected date because the future is not going to be exactly like the last 7 days. I only really look at the smoothed trend due the last week or two. Also it's a running average and that method tends to lag, so the trend it's showing you really applies to the previous week. That's why when you are losing weight it always tells you you are heavier than you really are. It's not perfect, but it's a very useful tool.

I just downloaded Libra, and put in some date. How do I get to this projected date thingy? I can't see it.

As you start logging your weight it will create your projection line based on your personal trend. The other line is set according to the info you input via the settings. :) Hope this helps @ShammersPink

    Ah, I see. Thank you.

That trend line finishes almost perfectly on my chosen goal date, although I'm currently a bit below the straight line, so I thought it was just finishing at my input goal date by default.

Thanks for sharing this, I just set it up says it will take until mid Sept. 2017 to get to goal.

Well just remember to take into consideration your deficit planned. For me, I chose to lose 1lb/week, and I have 61lbs to lose, so that should take me about 61 weeks to lose. This is what I chose as my goal date. From there, the trend will simply indicate when you would reach your goal according to what your trend is. This is similar, like someone was saying, to MFP's ''If everyday was like today, you would lose X in 5 weeks'', but instead it tells you more like if everyday was like today, you goal date would be X.

Hope that makes sense @Ming1951 :)
