Hey so I am becoming really good about incorporating some sort of exercise in my day. However I know that 80% of weight loss has to do with your diet! I was wanting to know what you guys did when you started out. I don't want to starve myself! Please let me know the little things you did to jump start weight loss, ie; keeping your sugar intake below a certain amount, cutting out carbs.. any advice would be great to start!

I'm a grazer so I've been trying to keep healthy snacks with me throughout the day. It keeps me from making bad quick decisions and over eating when I have a meal.

There wasn't really any jump start, just incremential changes in a thousand and one small boring habits. I stuck religiously to my calorie goal, but I also reduced carb intake and upped protein and fat somewhat. Be aware that the only crucial thing for weight loss/management, is to get in an appropriate amount of calories.

If you want recipes, you can probably get more help if you ask for specific recipes in the Recipe board.

Make sure to prepare at least one good sized serving of veg with everything you eat and cut down the high cal stuff on the plate. Like instead of using two pieces of bread and eating a regular sandwich, use one and eat a bunch of carrots and snap peas or whatever. Halve the pasta you would eat and add a bunch of broccoli instead, that kind of thing.

I'm a firm believer in small changes that will become habits. This is what works for me.

I started walking the stairs instead of taking the elevator. I added more vegetables at nearly every meal and tried new ones. I eat most of my meals at home and usually have a couple dishes cooked and ready to go. More beans less meat. Soup is a staple in my house. Fiber is my friend.

I found that I ate a smaller dinner if I had a small snack at 4pm..a cup of soup or an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter.

    And logging everything..no matter what.

    Congrats on your activity. Woot!

There's thing you do when youre syarting out and things you do when you finally realize what you're doing. Any tips to cut sugar or carbs or not eat after 6 or guzzle protein shakes or do a handstand while drinking 64 oz. Of water upside down should be greeted with a kung fu punch to the rhetorical soft parts.

Cut your calories a few hundred and eat what you normally eat and be patient. Your wildest dreams will then come true.

I'm with Dano--eat pretty much what you usually do, but cut back on the amount to fit your calorie goal. Add veggies, since they will fill you up for fewer calories. It's sort of like grocery shopping for the week with less money. You have to stretch your shopping with better choices to fit. No fads necessary (explained admirably by Dano)

Weight loss is 100% calorie deficit.
