What is the better way to work out on treadmill

:yawn: I have been waking at a 3 to 3.5 pace and an incline 6 to 8 I do this for 45 min and I get a good cal burn .but today I was told I should do a lower pace and a higher incline to get a better work out was told to do a 20 incline and a 2 pace ... I did manage to get up to 15 incline my heart rate did go up but the calories burned overall were lower any thoughts?
