Hello, I keep forgetting to drink water! What do you do to help you stay hydrated through the day?

There's an app called "AquaAlert" that you'll find useful
You put in your body, activity level and wether or not its Summer and they tell you how much to drink. They also give you words of encouragement and benefits of drinking water for consistently logging1 -
My fitness tracker tells me to move every hour. Part of my moving is going to either get 1 of my 3 coffees a day or 1 of my 4-5 coffee mugs of water.
If I miss an hour, I miss an hour. Funny how I don't seem to miss an hour when it's 1 of the 3 coffees.3 -

Ha! Maybe I should just drink more coffee...

Nothing wrong with coffee, in moderation. If I have more than 3, it does affect my sleep though. So I try to limit it to 3 and have none after 1 pm. Not weight loss related, not general advice, just what I know works for me.
But it has to be strong, dark roast, and nothing in it. So no calories in mine. Weekends, I may add Bailey's, but I haven't even done that in months.0 -
Hydration comes from anything you drink, including caffeinated beverages, and from the foods you eat. You're probably more hydrated than you think. Nothing wrong with more water though.4

When I pee and it's not clear, I need to drink something. After coming off of a weeklong battle with 15 pounds of water retention due to dehydration and sod/pot imbalance, I won't be making that mistake again any time soon. xD
Looking like a pregnant cow for a week is all the motivation I needed.0 -
I use "Waterlogged." You can set your amount, as well as when you start and stop drinking. If you're behind, you can set up "smart alerts." Love it.0

I carry a 24 oz water bottle wherever I go...I drink throughout the day, re-fill, repeat....0

You don't really need to drink unless you're thirsty.

The only problem with relying on thirst, is that the sensation is known to fade with age. Not as much of an issue up to middle age, but it becomes a serious problem once people get into their 50s and up. My girlfriend's father was a prime example. Only drank when thirsty, kept getting dehydration induced kidney infections, and they finally had to force him to start setting alarms to drink water.0 -

After pubmed search, I buy that haha. But also, only 1 person (I think) in this thread has that to worry about.1 -

I agree ! I rarely actually feel thirsty - I'm 61. To be honest I've always been that way. Also - I don't know if this is true- I read that by the time you feel thirsty you're already dehydrated.
I probably don't drink enough - I tried the 8 glasses thing and got sick of toilet trips in the middle of the night! Also it seems to suppress my appetite- not a good thing as I'm trying to gain weight. Most days I manage 5-6 glasses and feel fine on that.0 -

I'm 40, and aside from exercise or manual labor, I couldn't tell you the last time I felt like I needed to drink something due to actual thirst.0 -

I have an app called Water Minder that does it for me. It was very helpful getting started, and now I have developed a habit I don't think it helps with weight but it sure cleaned my skin up nicely.0

Based on his estimate of thirst starting to wane at 50, yes, you haha.0 -

Hmmm and I'm slightly over 50 and notice no waning of thirst. I wake up wanting a big glass of water, and coffee, then I have a LARGE smoothie. Then I drink large glasses throughout the day, even right before bed. (It gets me up faster in the morning, lol)
I'm in florida though so drinking water all day to combat dehydration from sweat is sort of a mantra down here. The habit carries over into cooler, drier parts of the year.0 -
Old fart here!
I drink when thirsty - at least one part of my body is still working as per the manual.
When I'm exercising thirst is actually misleading and I drink too much, dry mouth being mistaken for lack of hydration.
I think worrying about how much water (or other hydrating drinks) to have is a bit of an odd thing to worry about unless you are actually prone to dehydration (and have signs of that) or have a medical condition.
Myth of the 8 cups of water a day rule...

I rarely feel thirsty too (I'm 43) but I put that down to not eating high salty or sugary foods, as I used to always feel thirsty when I ate these foods. I have a 1 litre water bottle that I keep with me reminding myself to at least drink the whole thing once a day and then I also get water from foods I eat and tea/coffee.0 -
Just set an hourly reminder for yourself. I also forget. I have placed my water in a place that I will see it and therefore think about it. I keep a tally of how many cups I have had. Otherwise I will not drink anything beyond my morning coffee or a glass of milk.0

I am 53 and havent noticed any waning in thirst signals nor any noticable difference in how much liquid I consume,( I dont track it so I dont really know) nor do I get kidney infections or any other relevant conditions.
MY thoughts: unless you have a medical issue, like recurring UTI's or kidney function issues or any other actual reason to monitor this - just drink when you want to and dont stress about the amount.
Unless you are trekking through the desert or something, when dehydration might really be an issue.
So I guess in answer to Op's question - what do I do to help stay hydrated through the day?
Nothing.
I just drink if I feel like drinking.1 -
Yeah, , just like paperpudding said.0

I wonder why MFP hasn't implemented water reminders? It would be simple enough, you can already set meal and weight logging reminders. I intermittently use Waterlogged but I would love to minimize the number of apps I use / have everything in one place. This seems like low-hanging fruit as a feature.0
