Ab Workouts Why???

OK I have a just a quick question that's been bothering me. Why does everyone do things like ab workouts if you can't spot reduce. If your abs are going to go when they are good and ready, why work them so hard? If I have this roll of fat, will adding an ab workout make any difference?? I've lost 23 lbs. and still have around 40 to go. I do lots of walking on the treadmill and I work out to a weight lifting dvd. Please let me know if I'd just be wasting my time adding an ad workout to my routine. Thanks for any help!!

Strengtheng your core is important for balance and stability -- this is especially important as we age and are more prone to falls. If you don't want to do abs every work out, go to a Pilates class at your gym once a week or something.

<---No ab work done. These were built using heavy compound lifts (squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull ups, etc.).

    This.

I would recommend SOME ab exercises, but not like most people do them.

The few I do are hanging leg raises and the ab roller/wheel.
  • It is true that you cannot spot reduce, but that does not mean that once you get your bodyfat % low enough that you will have a nice set of sculpted abdominal muscles rippling underneath your sports bra.

Just like any other muscle, it will look better if you work it out.

That doesn't HAVE to mean abdominal isolation movements, but yea, you're going to have to put those core muscles through some resistance training to get them to look how you want them to.
