To lose weight: eat less calories than you need to maintain your weight.
To be healthy: exercise regularly and get your RDA of macro/micro nutrients.

There are a lot of posts on here that will help, including the pinned ones at the top. Start off with reading those and then come back with some questions and we'll help you out.

    Welcome and best wishes.

The MFP food and exercise diary is a good place to start. Many people start by logging what they eat every day, withour making changes, to get a realistic picture of the calories they are eating and their food choices.

The food diary has a goal area where you choose your goal weight. The program will tell you how many calories to eat per day to lose weight. You can gain more calories by exercise and can eat some or all of those calories back.

It quickly becomes obvious that in order to lose weight, you only have so many calories per day, like only so much money to spend.

My goals were to lose weight and also become a healthier person since I had several health problems (hypertension and high cholesterol), so I changed the quantities and some of the food I was eating (I added more vegetables instead of so many sweets because the vegetables are lower in calories and have better nutrition). Most people find it's a good idea to leave some calories for a few treats so they don't feel completely restricted and end up binging.

Other people approach the whole thing by making no changes to their food and just eating smaller amounts.

The most helpful thing I've done to lose weight and become healthier is meal plan with nutritious foods that make me feel full, like oatmeal for breakfast and lots of vegetables. Then I don't feel tempted to grab whatever is in front of me. You might look in the community area called Recipes to get ideas.

Start by logging your food and drink for a week in MFP then you will see what you actually eat and be able to work out what you need to adjust. Stick with it and be honest with your diary and you will see results. Good luck
