If you're not particularly lean, it shouldn't really be a big deal...usually where things become difficult is when you're already pretty lean and looking to get leaner...like a guy who's say, 12% BF trying to get down to 8% or something.
I gained about 10 Lbs while injured this fall and I'm taking it off at a rate of about 1 Lb per week...I'll be right around 12-14% when I'm done which is my easy to maintain "sweet spot"0 -

It took me about 3 months. I was fairly lean going leaner. I lost a good chunk rapidly at the beginning, then the rest at about .25-.5/week. When you are are short, lean woman, you don't have much playing room for a deficit.2
-
If I calculated correctly it took my roughly 7-8 months to get from 132 to 122 lbs.
It was definitely the hardest part for me and sadly (due to poor logging and choices) the part I am doing again. *sigh*
edit: I wasn't particularly lean (I will see if I can find pics), but I started having a harder time sticking to a deficit so I alternated between weeks at a deficit and weeks maintaining to keep my sanity. The pics are kind of reversed there, but the one on the right is around 132 lbs. The ones on the left are around 122 lbs. I say around, because I don't have enough time for me to look up the exacts (and still be able to edit this post). The differences on the left two are mostly just lighting and hydration levels seeing as they are exactly 5 days apart.4 -
Probably at least 6 months, I'd have to look back at my records to be sure. It is harder to create enough of a deficit when you have only 10 lbs to lose. A variation of even a few hundred calories per day can make all the difference. The recommended rate is .5 per week. I'm not losing even that fast now, but it's ok.0

It took me about 9 months. I'm pretty lean.....0

The body r e a l l y wants to hold onto that last little layer of protection.
Add to it that you admit to not being consistent and accurate in logging. For me, that was necessary.
I ate every meal at home. Logged every single thing. Exercise five days a week for 45 min to an hour. Had a spreadsheet. Watched my macros like my life depended on it. Didn't snack. Dessert one time a week.
It's not easy. I'm in the low/middle of my BMI healthy weight now, and it still is a balancing act. I want to eat more, but my past logging and records prove to me I cannot.10 -

Thanks for sharing this. I think (?) I've got 10-15 to go. I saw 129 briefly and then bounced back up to 133. I think I should be 120. I've been in the 130's since September. So slow ... but good to know others go through this and appreciate seeing your approach.2 -

Yeah, you're welcome. I lost most of my weight in 2007, but I was more or less content to be just barely inside my healthy BMI. Last year I said, "That's it. I'm losing this last 15."
Ha. It took eight months. It's hard when you're already at a healthy weight. My body fought me every step of the way. "Eat more," it whispered. "You are so hungry," it begged. I'm holding on, but I'm not saying it's easy. I just got to this weight right before winter hit, too. I always want to eat all the food in the winter.
"Buy that pumpkin pie," it taunts.14 -

On a slight tangent; how have you decided on your goal weight?0
-
I started back in Oct at 197lbs.. I wasn't calories counting... Only exercise. Then I was injured and wasn't able to work out for a few weeks.. came across MFP about 2 weeks ago and started it at 185lbs without any cheat days or cheat meals I'm currently 180lbs. I think for me, being very serious about staying within my calorie goal is very important.1

Were those your last 10 lbs?

Yeah, if you are not too lean it might not take as long. I have a decent amount of muscle and it can literally take me months to see the scale move. Often I'll get physique changes before it even moves. When I was less lean and going from slightly overweight into a healthy weight category, it didn't take that long. It was a pretty standard .5lb per week loss, though not linear.1 -
I feel like my last 10 have been fairly easy. I am 5'6" and a goal of 140. I was at 150 the first of October and have been at 139 the last few days. I am still nursing my twins a few times a day and wondered how much that was helping. My husband is working on his last 10 as well and his is going a lot slower. I'm a lot more active than he is. He works full time in IT, so tied to a desk, I am a stay at home mom to a 3 year old and 15 month old twins. I feel like I could get lower if I wanted to but I don't want to have to work so hard to maintain it, although now that I am here, I will probably try to maintain between 135 and 140, so I still have a bit more to go.1
-
It's not so much that the process slows down - it's that you have less room for error. You have to be extra diligent in counting and any day "over" undoes the little deficit that you've accumulated. I have found, though, that I'm not in such a hurry at this point. I look pretty lean and just keep plugging along. I figure I'm really sort of doing a body recomp at this point, so I'm not so much focused on the scale number.3

trigden1991 wrote: »On a slight tangent; how have you decided on your goal weight?
This is a good point. I picked a random number for my first goal weight. When I reached that, fairly easily, I re-evaluated and dropped 13 more pounds. I'm 5'4" and at 132 now. I know if I tightened up my logging a little more I could drop a few more vanity pounds. But, at 63 years old, I'm not a vain person so I'm really pleased with where I'm at. I'm not sure that trying to achieve a lower weight is worth the effort at this point. I look and feel better than I have in over 30 years, my blood workup is perfect, and I really don't want to spend more money on smaller clothes.6 -

There is very little room for error. I also seem to feel hungrier at this stage. Now maybe that's my body fighting back, poor choices or just a mental thing , but it definitely makes it slower.
Up until about 133 lbs (bmi 22.8), weight loss was pretty steady. Not linear, but it typically worked out to around 1 lb per week avg. I decided I wanted to lean out further and that's were things started to get slow.
Now someone whose goal isn't to get to that point might find the last 10 lbs super easy. If I would have stopped at 130 lbs or so for example I wouldn't be saying it took so long.0 -

Outside of being already relatively lean, the difficulty with the last 10 Lbs is usually diet fatigue and shoddy, inconsistent adherence to plan. A lot of this is just psychological with that "end game" seemingly right in front of you and within reach. Then there is also usually some element of hormonal imbalance going on which directly impacts metabolic function, particularly if one has been dieting for a prolonged period of time.
Looking back to my initial weight loss, going from 190 - 180 was quite slow...closer examination of this period, however, reveals that in fact I was suffering from "diet fatigue" more than anything else. Up to that point I had been very vigilant in my diet and exercise protocol and rarely wavering from an almost religious like adherence. As I got closer to what I thought my goal was, little things started creeping in...I had given up beer completely during most of my initial weight loss phase...during those last 10 Lbs, it started creeping back into my daily or at least a few days per week...I ate out rarely during my initial weight loss phase...I ate out more during those last 10 Lbs...I was quite militant with my food scale early on in my weight loss...much less so later on, etc, etc, etc.
I was still being pretty good with things, just not as good...or should I say not nearly as religious. I'm taking those same "last 10 Lbs" off now again, and while I'm not quite as gung ho about things as my first go around, it's coming off quite easily having lost about 2.5 Lbs since Thanksgiving...though I will be taking a little maintenance break starting next week and through New Years. Like I said, I'm not nearly as gung ho as I was early on in my initial weight loss, but I'm far more disciplined with these "last 10 Lbs" than I was the first go around...

I initially had the "145lbs" in mind but once i got there i felt like its not what im comfortable with
Im surprised though that even at 135.0 (this morning)
Im still not satisfied, i feel like my tummy is still giant !
And thats how i decided 125lbs should be good on my 5'1 frame
Overall thinking of this makes me feel sad why us women need a lot in order to think " ok i love my body now "

It is odd. In my younger years I was never happy with my body, even when I was slender. I thought my thighs were huge compared to my upper (boobless!) body. Now, after being overweight to borderline obese for 30+ years, then losing enough to be almost back to my pre-fat days, my body is not disproportionate, it was all in my head. I do love my body now, I'm just sad that it took me so long to figure that out. I'm 63, so I feel I wasted a lot of years being unhealthy and not liking myself.3 -
Thank you all0

It makes me think now ... in my younger years i was happy at 10 lbs heavier!
