Hi. I just turned 39 about a week ago. 40 is looming ahead. I was going through my blogs and for the past year or more I have been gaining and losing the same 30 pounds. I need a goal. A real tangible one with a set date.. so I picked my 40th birthday in December of 2017. I think 100 pounds might be too ambitious but 50 pounds isn't enough. Going by my past logs I can lose 30 pounds in 3-4 months but then I usually start gaining again and quit. I think I am going to set up a group (maybe someone will join me) and do a challenge. How much is a reasonable goal? HW is 315. Current weight is 296. I've only lost 13 pounds in the past 5 weeks and right now I'm yo-yoing the same 3 pounds for the past 2 weeks. I'm working two jobs and raising a teenager on my own. One of the jobs is in retail so that will slow down in about a month and I can start going to the gym again on a regular basis. I'll cut back my hours from 25-35 hours a week to 15-20 and start sleeping again.

Suggestions?

I wonder if you yo-yo because when you are dieting, you are overly restrictive, and your calorie goal is not sustainable.

I prefer to have modest weight loss goals and lose weight slowly and steadily. My goal was not to lose X by Y, but to commit to logging every day. No f-it, I'll start Monday days :)

Studies show that keeping a food journal helps people lose weight. Most people naturally eat less when we are aware of what we are eating. I would suggest for you a goal of logging every day until your 40th.

This. 100 pounds could be doable depending on your height and your ultimate goal weight. But if you find yourself quitting after quick losses (and 13 pounds in five weeks is quick!) and seeing your weight fluctuate, you may find it easier to aim a bit lower.

I agree with the above two posts.

Also, could you be depriving yourself of things you love when dieting, then bingeing on them after you can't stick to it?

A lot of people do that.

What worked for me is eating whatever I most loved within my daily calorie limit. That meant eating chocolate and drinking alcohol nearly every day, all things in moderation.

    I lost 80 lbs in 12 months (SW 218 lbs; 5 ft 9.5 in).

I lost fifty by my fiftieth. It all depends on your diet and exercise. I added a water class and the second twenty five came off faster. But starving yourself like I did this week gave me a gain. You have to eat to lose weight and move more. Adding another day and a new exercise works amazing! You so can do this! Huge good luck!

100 lbs in a year is ambitious, but it's doable (I've seen people do it) if you have a healthy metabolism. Set up a tough workout regime and dial in your nutrition. You can do it! Work hard and develop outrageous consistency. That is the key.
