Hi guys
Want to get more healthy - have joined SW (I am classified as obese) and now getting back into excercise.
Planning on doing 3 body pump sessions and 1 spinning session a week.
Is this too much/not enough? I dont like the gym so have incorporated walking in here as well - half an hour lunchtimes and half hour after work.
Any input much appreciated!!
Love love xx

If you can handle it, it's not too much. Best thing is to give it a try and be willing to back off or add on as you see fit.0

If you don't like the gym, don't do it. You won't stay at it, unless you "get the buzz" and end up addicted to doing it. To be honest, just walk. That's more than enough if you're classified as obese right now. When I started out, all I did was walk, and that was true until only 6 weeks ago, so I lost over 90lbs doing no exercise except walking (plus calorie restricting after I'd lost the first 30lbs or so). Just walk as fast as you can for as long as you have time to. I did about 50 mins a day at first, so your plan should see you losing without the need for further exercise. You may well find you want to try other things as you get fitter, of course. I started running 6 weeks ago - something I NEVER thought would happen!
P.S. Top Tip for walking - listen to Audiobooks or Podcasts on subjects you're interested in. If you can find a daily podcast, so much the better. I listen to Sports and comedy Podcasts, and it really helped me to get through the walking at first (after a while I found I didn't need to listen to them because I actually started to enjoy the walking!)0 -
why don't you like the gym?0

Do what lights your fire. Like a poster above said, if you don't like something it makes it less likely you'll stick it. I lost weight doing aerobics, zumba, swimming, dancing and walking. However, now I have been maintaining for 9 months I have started building up on weights because I want to reduce my body fat further and it doesn't seem to want to go down any further on just cardio. So pick a few things you enjoy (so you use different muscle groups rather than just doing the same thing all the time) and KEEP MOVING - that will help you.
Another suggestion - get a fitbit and see how much you move and then set yourself targets to improve it as the weeks go by. It's good for your general health and well being as well as weight reduction. Good luck! :-)0 -
Agree with others - if you don't like the gym you will find this hard to sustain, unless you don't like gym but are okay with body pump class.
After I'd started losing with SW I started exercising at home. I was very obese, so I started with EA Active on the Wii fit - behind closed curtains! It took several months before I was confident to start doing some exercise outside home. I did a lot more walking, and then started some jogging. It was over a year before I tried a gym. I have lost over 5 stone and kept it off, but I have made exercise part of my life and I enjoy it (helps that my asd son now likes to walk every where, and I have to cycle to work as we have no parking!). Be honest about what you will be able to do long term, or you'll resent it, and I know that's when I would give up!0 -
If you haven't worked out before/in a long time, I think 3 body pump sessions per week is too much. I'd just listen to your body. Maybe start with one per week and slowly add in more.
Don't push yourself so hard that you burn out and quit in 2 weeks.0 -
Too much? Nope
If you don't enjoy exercise, then you have to think of it this way: How many calories do I want to burn vs. how much food do I want to eat? You will have to compromise a bit but that's really how you might try thinking about it.
Find your balance, keep a healthy head, and find exercise that you can enjoy that will meet your goals. If you don't like exercising, maybe you like dancing (Zumba hint hint)? If you go overboard at the start no problem, don't beat youself up, don't give up, just scale back and re-plan, that's how you learn about your limits and progress.

try a bodypump and a cycle class first. get a gauge on how it makes you feel. im in pretty good shape but bodypump will wear my a** out. my instructor said start out with easy weights until you know what you're doing. build from there. it's a fast paced class (especially the 30 min. one) and it's a lot of repetition. but it will make your heart pound. cycling is kind of the same way but focusing way more on cardio and legs. take a couple of classes to figure out where your levels are- and it may change from class to class depending on hydration sleep, nutrition, etc. but man, what a high. it's not like outdoor cycling, but sometimes i can't help but smile while i pour sweat.
it wont be too much as long as you are realistic about where to start as far as intensity but still push yourself to get better. and commit to it if you are going to do it. i hated going to the gym at first. but once i got there and started moving, i felt fantastic. hubs still has to drag me by the collar some days- i admit it. but it's pretty rare that i ever drag my feet while i'm there now.
the important thing is that you get up and start moving. whatever it is that will get you up and get your heart pumping. if it excites you, makes you sweat and makes you smile while you're doing it- make time for it.
start anywhere. just start.0 -
Thanks guys.
I don't like the gym as in I'm not motivated to do anything but stroll on a treadmill and watch tv lol
But I do like the classes have booked in for 2 body pump tomorrow and wed and a spin class Monday (killer hate hate hate spin but gets good results) booked the classes when I was feeling motivated so I will get up t tomorrow morning to go.
Going to try and fit in an hour of walking on days not in classes got 6 weeks until holiday I would be happy if I lost a stone in this time0 -
A stone in 6 weeks is a high expectation. 3 kg is reasonable, though, and sustainable.
Do what you love, take the classes and see how it goes. You're never going to know if it is too much or not enough for you until you try.0 -
I'm going for 2 lb a week - just doing sw can get those results so adding in excercise should assist and help me tone!
Off to body pump this morning hope the class has air con!0
