So quick background I'm down 63 pounds since may. I walk hills or hike daily and get a good workout for me in. ive done this or swimming laps since may. still have 70 pounds to loose. eat at a deficit...don't eat exercise calories back.

last week I started lifting for first time ever and have had 4 sessions and also started running up and down flights of stairs on my 15 min breaks 3 times a week.

overnight my weight went up 6 pounds. I waited 3 days to see got on scale today up another 2.5 so 8.5 in a week...scared? does this sound right with new exercise routine? I know some water retention normal but seemed like a lot....when does it go away?

Varies by person. Plus we retain water for a variety of reasons which can coexist, meaning that you could be retaining water due to lifting, ovulating, and eating more sodium than usual all at the same time.

I know it's hard mentally, but just remember that if you're eating right and tracking, there's no way it's NOT water. 8.5 lbs in a week would be equivalent to 29,750 extra calories over your maintenance. Did you eat almost 30,000 extra calories this week? If not, then it's water.

Have you been eating the same amount? By that are you logging the same number of calories measured the same way?

Barring no dietary influences, yeah...it's possible. Every time I switch up my lifting routine my weight shoots up. It's happened so many times that now I just expect it.

I've been eating the same...I weigh my food. I ate out 3 times last week I stayed within calories but had to estimate sizes but I tend to overestimate so that's good. only thing different I have a sensitivity to gluten and a restaurant served me gluten free pasta that was not gluten free.. I'd bet money on it but didn't know till after I ate it. I was also sick for a couple days so body might hold water I guess. my muscles were sore today!

Give it two weeks. This little cluster stall was when I started lifting for the first time:

If you were eating the same, you did not put on fat. It is water weight, and yes, it can take two weeks, sometimes even more, to go away especially if the muscle soreness continues.

Thanks for the info I'll keep at it. If I'm just starting can I lift every day or should I rest muscles in between....lifting light to get form down

Use an actual lifting program. Don't just put one together yourself. Stronglifts 5x5, Strong Curves, New Rules for Lifting for Women, and others all give good programs. Rest is important for muscles to repair themselves. Some programs have rest days between workouts that cover the whole body. Others rest various muscle groups by not exercising them and exercising other muscle groups instead, cycling through the whole body.

happened to me. i've been lifting close to three years, but last month when i did pretty much nothing for about 9 days my weight dropped from 136 down to 132 or 3 while i was shedding water and probably using up my creatine stores. and then the day after i went back and merely resumed my existing lifting routine, i weighed 140 again. i'm 5'3" so that's a pretty significant jump.

and it wasn't even from' shocking' my body really. i'ts been lifting for a long time so it's used to it. but just going back to an existing routine after a week or more off seems to give me a spike.
