Gin, gin rummy, rummy players

Hoping someone can help me figure this out as I'm having a hell of a time finding answers online. Does a suited run of three count?

Two players, 7 cards.
Gin when you get:
a) three of a kind + four of a kind
b) three of a kind + suited run of four
c) suited run of seven

I see a suited run of three as "weak" and don't play them, but others do (hence this thread). Did my friend and I make this rule up 20+ years ago or do others play this way?

the run of three is weak and i like having a house rule against them... but they are ok by Hoyle.

it might also make a difference depending on if you play with gin and rum penalties... oddly i play chess and cribbage with gin and rum penalties as well.

Runs of 3 or more cards in sequence count in the same suit. I prefer gin rummy to gin. But yes, however you make 3 or 4 counts.

I should point out a suited run of 7 is 3 and 4 combined. So yes 3 counts in a run of the same suit.

@jvcjim Thanks for the info. Also thanks for being another who recognizes three is weak ;-) a house rule sounds good, not sure the hubs will go for that, but I can try. I'm not clear on the difference between gin, gin rummy, and rummy, so I'm not sure which I'm playing. No penalties, just play and maybe keep track of hands won (I'm in it for the fun of the game). I have played Rummy 500, that takes forever.

Is 7 card not a real game?

@cee134 What's the difference between gin rummy and gin? I see a suited run of seven as just that since a run of three doesn't count (in my mind), but I get what you're saying. Thank you!

Well Gin Rummy is 10 cards. I like it better because you hold the cards in your hand until you get 3,3,4. I forget how it's scored.

It's either Gin or Rummy which is the 7 card version and you keep putting down sets as you get them, I never played that version much.

Thanks for the clarification. The way I play, all 7 stay in your hand until you call gin (less to hold in your hand).
