The key to losing weight is a calorie deficit. That deficit can come from eating less and/or adding exercise or activity.
Eating less is far more effective than exercise in terms of losing weight. I can eat a Snicker's bar in less than 60 seconds, but it takes me 45 minutes (doing cardio) to burn that off. So exercise isn't the "key" to losing weight for the vast majority of us.
The best exercise is one that you enjoy doing. The best exercise is one that you may make a permanent part of your lifestyle (after you lost the weight). The best exercise is one that helps you stay (or become) healthy & fit.
Cardio for heart, lungs, stamina. Cardio burns more calories than strength training. BUT strength training will help you keep a larger % of lean muscle mass (while eating less) and is great for bone health. Both are exellent for your health. I do them on separate days (in separate workouts) just because that's what I enjoy the most. I know that I will quit exercise if I hate it (been there too many times).2 -
The key to weight loss is a calorie deficit. That means, 1) You need to control how much you eat. 2) You can lose fat simply by eating less than your body burns during the day simply functioning, that is what your calorie goal on Myfitnesspal is based on. Exercise is primarily for health, not for weight loss. Log your food carefully and meet your calorie goal and you should lose weight whether you exercise or now.0

1. As many as you'd like as long as you aren't overdoing it
2. Whatever exercise you like to do. Find something you enjoy and do it. If you're trying to do exercises you don't enjoy you won't stick with it.
As others have said calorie deficit for weight loss - exercise for health.1 -
76.5 minutes burning 250 calories if your TDEE is 2000 and you eat 1750 you should lose 1 lb per seven days...1

Do what you have time and energy to do. There's no set number. I do between 80-90 minutes a day 5 days a week but could easily do just fine with 30 minutes a day by adjusting my calorie intake. When I was losing weight I was doing 90 minutes a day 6 days a week, but I had fitness goals in mind as much as the weight loss. I have friends on MFP that do 120 minutes a day 3 or 4 days a week. Some do only 20 minutes a day 3 or 4 days a week. Everyone is different, and everyone has different goals. Do what suits you and your goals.2

You can lose weight without exercising, it's all about the calories you expend being greater than the calories consumed.
Having said that there are compelling reasons to exercise regularly; better health, improved mood etc and numerous studies have shown that people who make a habit of being active are more likely to keep the weight off in the long term.
As to the best exercise......something you enjoy and will keep doing in the long term. Personally I love running, cycling, lifting weights etc (and running is one of the most efficient calorie burner around) but you should do what works for you.2 -
