Question about MFP's carb and fiber calculations.

In the food diary it lists the total carbs and the total fiber. Are the carbs already calculated as net carbs or do I have to take that from the fiber that is listed in its category?

MFP doesn't do the calculation for you, BUT be aware that since most of the individual food database entries are from food labels (as entered by MFP users), there's not a lot of consistency in the raw data. Some food manufacturers label calories based on net carbs and some don't, and for some reason that's allowed in the US by the FDA. (Personally I'd prefer it if they didn't deduct fiber calories, but I'd settle for consistency.)

For foods that tend to be dense in carbs and fiber (e.g., dry beans and lentils, a lot of high-fiber processed foods) it's often worthwhile to double-check the label to make sure everything adds up the way you want/ need it to. For me that means just making sure that calories roughly= carbs*4 + protein*4 + fat*9, and if it doesn't, to see what happens if I deduct fiber grams from carbs and recalculate.
