It's January I'm starting again!

I am 62 years old. Every January I start to try and lose weight. I need to lose probably 100lbs. In looking back over some papers I saw that I weigh the same today as I did in 1986. So I've been thinking about dieting, planning to diet or failing to diet for over 30 years. I've had some successes at losing a significant amount. Is there such a thing as a permanent change? I am starting to have a lot of aches and pains. I need to do this, but at the same time I'm tired. Just want to feel better.
