I was running today. Dropped my phone, idiot behind me on his bike ran it over and smashed it, narrowly missing me in the process. $149 to replace it, which was fine- I got a 32G phone, my 16G was running out of space. Now my running app is inaccessible for a few days. I want to cry. How can I run without live tracking, speed, pace, and caloric info? <Supposed to be funny.>

I'd be so pissed. Did he apologize?

At least you have extra G now

My question is why he was so close to her while she ran? Seems unsafe and unwise to ride that close to a person on foot. What if she'd tripped? He was so close that he couldn't stop?

    Sorry about your phone, OP!

Story really doesn't say how far behind her she was when the phone was dropped. Phone could have easily bounced into the bike's path as he was swinging out to pass.

All sort of reasons, I've had pedestrians so lost in their phones or music that they've been completely unaware of a bike trying to get past them, or taking up a disproportionate amount of space. No amount of calling out and asking to get past is going to get their attention.

Equally, there may have been plenty of space. Your assumption is that the cyclist was too close. I was running on Sunday morning and as is my custom was sticking to the left of the trail, so that either faster runners or cyclists could get past without any issue.

LOL - how many people on here didn't read OP statement 'supposed to be funny' and are taking this too seriously. Some people need to seriously unwind ;)

I think you maybe didn't read the op statement. The part she said was supposed to be funny referred to how could she run without live tracking, etc.

Haha I try not to take one step without my fitbit attached to me! I leave it in my bedroom when i have a shower, and i "shuffle" down the hallway as soon as I'm dry to put it back on. Craycray lady in da house

Oh yes! When I shower I feel bad for wasting the 5 steps it takes me to go from bathroom to bedroom! Funny how dependant on technology some of us are. I would feel lost without it.

Get a Garmin and shower with it :)

Mine is off for ~45 minutes a day to charge while I shower, but yeah, it is waterproof. Even wear it doing the dishes. I get a slight rash from it so I wear it on my right wrist at night.

Especially when they are wearing ear buds. You ring your bell, you yell at the top of your lungs, and ... nothing. No reaction. And then they're startled when you ride past.

They make air horns for bikes btw, they are extremely effective at cutting through distractions.

And @OP: Really glad to hear the phone didn't cause the cyclist to crash.

Some of you people really need to stop taking everything so seriously. The whole post was funny, except the bigger replacement as that truly was helpful. I don't know how far behind me he was, he was behind me and I was on the running trail. It was my fault for dropping it but he shouldn't have been riding where he was riding as it's a narrow pathway closed to cyclists.

Bad seeds in every group of enthusiasts -- I knew you were joking-pepper spray can take out an illegal cyclist in just a few seconds just get it on Video..lol..

It amuses me making people jump when I'm running... some people are dangerous the lack of awareness that they have on busy roads

Well, on the bright side, it's good that (I assume) you didn't crash the cyclist when you dropped your phone on the trail.

By the way, I ran with my phone not in a zippered pocket one time, also dropped it, and just hitting the ground is pretty hard on a phone.

It's like when grandma buys a new couch, then hides it under plastic sheets. I'd rather sit on the couch. We can put a sheet over it in a few years when the couch doesn't look so great anymore, but until then, let's enjoy it. And if they're going to charge extra for a slim phone that feels better in your pocket, I'm not going to entomb it in a dictionary-sized chunk of plastic.

As I said, when I run with my phone now, it stays in a zippered pocket.

I keep my phone in an armband usually while running. It fits tightly and has a flap that secures with velcro and then the part of the flap with velcro on it is against my arm. I've never dropped it while using that armband.

I've always associated those big clunky phone cases with people who also wear pen protectors in their pockets

I've got one of those silicone covers which comes out just past the screen, which saves it from getting smashed. I've dropped mine quite a few times, face down and it's never cracked.
