Down 5 lbs in 5 weeks - Up 5 lbs in 5 days!!

I had to leave quickly last week to fly out East for the death of an aunt. Sad reason to see a lot of my family, but still was great to get together. A little too great!! Came back after 5 days and weighed myself... gained 5 pounds!!! I was expecting to be up a pound or two, but wasn't ready for 5!
First reaction was to give up, but deep breath and start logging everything again to stay in my calorie zone. Good reminder that I'm definitely needing MFP to keep myself on track. Excuse me - time to munch on my celery sticks. :grumble:

I'm sorry for your loss!
I bet some of that weight is just retained water. I swell up a lot when I fly...0 -
Oh boy - it's so easy to slip! Part of my family is Asian, and I DREAD their parties - everything fried and OMG those gulab jamon!! If I don't eat it there they give me carry outs to bring home - rather than ditch it out the window on the motorway I bring it home and guess what - I eat it.
There is a fragile line between maintain and gain - especially if you overdo carbs. If I ate a whole chicken three times a day wouldn't gain an ounce. If I ate that damn box of gulab jamon (made with condensed milk, coconut and even more sugar then deep fried) I would put on 10 lbs!
Oh the joys of food monitoring!0 -

I am the QUEEN of rationalization, so I love this thought! Yes, it's all due to the flights. Nothing to do with eating fish and chips almost every day and drinking a little too much alcohol!! :happy:0 -
Just get back to healthy eating and lots of water and watch it go back down0

Well, if you ate somewhere around 5500 calories/day without exercising, you could achieve a real 5 pound gain. You probably didn't, so it's probably mostly water.
Regardless, the only thing you can change is what you do next. So keep on keeping on.0 -

^^^^This
The alcohol dehydrates you and eating out has so much more sodium then eating at home, that causes water retention. You'll be surprised at how quickly it will come back off.
I just had 5 bad days gained 6 lbs.. after 1 day of semi good behavior I'm already down 3 of the 6. Just keep on moving forward.0 -
You likely are seeing two effects, #1) Bad eating for a few days, #2) Water retention due to increase in sodium from eating out / eating salty foods.
#1 means, get back on the horse#2 means, drink a bit of extra water every day for the next couple days and your next weigh in should be a lot more realistic.
