Eating before exercise and not puking

Hey guys!

I picked up judo last month, but I'm still having a bit of an issue with scheduling. The class is at 8, and our family usually eats at 8. The class goes until 9 and is about 15 minutes away from home, so 9:15 is the earliest I would get home. Then I shower, eat, and go to bed, but it usually makes me lose sleep, which makes me tired.

I've never eaten dinner before the class because I'm too afraid of puking it up during class. But I feel like I need to, for the sake of my schedule. So how much earlier than class do you think I should eat to be free of the puking worry?

Sorry if that question doesn't make sense. If you need me to rephrase it, just ask and I'll try.
Thank you!

It will really depend on you- I'm an aerialist and my classes are 7-9 so I'm in the same boat. Lots of spinning, being upside down, etc so a full stomach isn't good. I usually try to eat no later than 5 or 5:30 for a 7pm class, and I keep it light. If I can't get a full meal, I'll have something easy to digest like pretzels or whole wheat crackers- enough to fill me up but nothing that will possibly upset my stomach.

When I was training in martial arts (aikido and iaido), I found that if I had anything more than a banana or a piece of toast an hour before training, my stomach would protest. Thankfully I never threw up, but I definitely came close a few times. Your body may be different than mine but if we're talking about a full blown meal, I'd give myself 2-3 hours before training. Perhaps you can have a small snack 30-60 minutes before and then eat dinner after?

You could switch to having your own main meal at lunch time the days you have classes and a smaller meal a couple of hours prior to class ( another one here who needs 2-3 hr between food and exercise). You could also have a small snack when you get home, it may help you sleep.

    Cheers, h.

Why do you think you would puke during class? Has that happened to you before? You probably do need the energy for the workout, so try to eat some carbs and protein an hour before. @middlehaitch gives you excellent advice ^^.

^it hasn't happened before, it's just been pretty hardcore sometimes, and the possibility of it happening is mortifying

It's definitely happened before at my dojo. I'd say about once every 2-3 months, someone would throw up either during or soon after training. Our sensei always kept a bucket close by just in case. ;)
