Just wondering if anyone else starting their new year weight loss journeys with the cabbage soup diet? I just feel like it's a great way to jump start my diet and help me get on track

Your not kick starting anything, your just falling for a gimmick.26

I've made the cabbage soup before, it's surprisingly tasty. I didnt follow the diet though, like bananas one day, meat on another. I just replaced higher calorie dinners and lunches with the cabbage soup 3-4 times a week. Admittedly, after i finished the pot I was sick and tired of the soup, i definitely could not eat it everyday.4

Well I don't plan on actually eating cabbage soup for all 3 meals, just dinner each night for a few days to clean my system.0

It wont do anything to clean your system, other than it might make you poop more. But having it for dinner each night is a fine plan.11 -
I would rather start my new year with healthy habits I can continue through the whole year. With that said I have been making a lot of veggie soup and incorporate it into a well rounded diet.10

What are you trying to clean your system from and how is cabbage going to achomplish that?
The only thing you need to do to lose weight is eat at the correct calorie deficit for your weight goals. No need to make it any more complicated than that8 -
I ADORE the cabbage soup that is used in that diet....I've never followed the diet, but my grandfather did and the soup was available in a crock pot on my grandparents table for the taking of anyone who wanted it. I'm pretty sure I ate more of it than he did and to this day, I can still eat numerous bowls if I don't contain myself.3

If I ate all that cabbage no one would want to be anywhere near me.
Hmmmm..... Suddenly it doesn't sound too terrible.17 -
That's not how any of this works.9

When I've been off track for several days (like after travelling or the holidays. . ) I "reboot" five or six times a year with a day or two of what I call "infinite soup."
The two main ingredients are a large can of diced tomatoes and half a head of napa cabbage . . . but not because they have any magical properties. It's just a high-fiber and low-calorie combination that I really LIKE!
So yesterday I started with a can of tomatoes and the leftovers from New Years pork-n-cabbage, some onion and veggie stock.
The "infinite" part is that as the day(s) go on, when I scoop out a serving, I then replace the volume with some other low-calorie high-fiber veggie and some water and spices.
Yesterday it was mushrooms and curry powder once, a few carrot sticks and red pepper strips leftover from the new years eve crudite the next time, and some kale ribs from making kale chips near the the end of the day.
This morning, I added another can of tomatoes, a few dried chiles, celery bases and frills leftover from chopping up some celery sticks, the remains of a bag of salad spinach that was getting limp, a dollop of miso paste, and more curry powder.
While it's true that a couple of very low calorie days helps balance out several high-calorie celebration days, I also like the psychological aspects of feeling oh-so-gosh-darned-virtuous! Really helps me "reboot" a mindset of mindful and thoughtful food choices.6 -

And make you crop dust everywhere you go.1 -
I love cabbage anything, but had no idea that someone had crafted a diet around it. Seems weird, to be honest, and not really sustainable? That said, I'm always looking for a new cabbage soup recipe if anyone wants to share lol0

I like a home made veggie soup after I get glutenated. Full of nutrients but easy on my belly/body that is in so much pain.1
-
Oh......hell no.
I did the cabbage soup diet when I was 18 years old. Did it for 5 days. I am 35 (in 12 days) and still cannot look at any cabbage soup.
It is unnecessary.
It makes one hangry
It can cause dizziness
And.....blech!
To kick start weight loss, you don't need to be miserable. Trust me on this one...that soup undoubtedly will cause you to be a miserable hangry tooting lonely gasbag...tifsimmons91 wrote: »Well I don't plan on actually eating cabbage soup for all 3 meals, just dinner each night for a few days to clean my system.
Our systems do not need to be cleaned out. We have a digestive system for this purpose. If you have heard that the body will store feces, it is absolutely not true at all, and is made up by companies selling detox systems which contain clay in their tablets to fool those who purchased the product into thinking that they indeed were full of crap. It is simply not how the body works. We also have great detoxing organs, and if they don't work, hospitalization would be the best thing to do.
It is absolutely not necessary to eat this soup, trust me. It is, indeed a fad diet, just like the hotdog diet or Military diet. Just weigh your food and stick to your deficit. your body will thank you.7 -
It is a fad diet that fails to instill healthy, sustainable eating habits and does nothing to "jump start" a diet. Getting on track requires nothing more than knowing what you're eating (tracking ... something MFP is made for) and staying within a sensible caloric deficit.
This is a GREAT first post!
This ridiculous cabbage soup diet has been around for decades.....yet people still continue to be overweight. It's not filling, and it's not healthy. Just log regular food & learn about YOUR own eating habits.5 -

It is weird......veggies one day....fruit the next......very low protein.
You don't want this recipe. At least in it's original (1980's Dolly Parton Diet) form. Back in the day many diets were very low fat.
Basically take a packet of Lipton Onion soup mix, canned or stewed tomatoes, chopped celery, chopped peppers, chopped onions and chopped cabbage.....add water. I had a co-worker who used this diet several times......she never seemed to keep the weight off.1 -

I used this recipe. Ignore the stupid title, as there is nothing "Fat burning" about it, it's just low calorie and pretty filling.

@TeaBea That recipe...sounds pretty terrible. I definitely couldn't do low protein either, since I do a lot of strength training. I'm glad that the only 'diet' I've ever done is counting calories on MFP
@Christine_72 Thanks for the recipe! I'll have to give it a try. Cabbage is down to .39 at the market and I'm a huge fan of allrecipes stuff1 -
Can't stand cabbage so no idea why I would want it in a soup.....2
-
I like cabbage in my soup. It's a cheap ingredient. In fact it's in my soup tonight Yay vegetarian soups1
-
Lots of veggies is a good idea! Very filling and satisfying, along with plenty of protein, healthy fats, some complex carbs.
If you aim for good macro proportions and fiber intake, you will be on the right track with your next meal!0 -
No... but here's a recipe to a cabbage soup a user posted a while back that I loved.2
-
Lol
I don't think anyone else is doing the cabbage soup diet.2 -
That sounds downright painful OP.
I promise, your body does not need any sort of "cleansing"-believe it or not, your liver and kidneys do it all for you! Pretty amazing if you ask me.
If you're looking to lose weight, all you need is a reasonable caloric deficit. You can eat whatever you want as long as you stick to the appropriate calorie count!4 -

I like raw cabbage ... I like cabbage wrapped around rice and mince in a cabbage roll ... but that's about it. I don't like it in soup.

NOT doing the cabbage soup diet ....
But I am trying my hand at making soup for the very first time. If it works, it will be a creamy cauliflower soup.
Why? Because I really like cauliflower soup when I've had it in restaurants, etc. but have never found a tin or package or whatever in the supermarket that does it justice. So I thought I'd make my own.1 -
The stench of cooked cabbage would certainly encourage me to get out of the house as much as possible greatly increasing my activity level. Besides that I'm not sure how cabbage soup would jump start my diet. Maybe if I had some methane powered appliances I could jump start those.
In all seriousness, if you like cabbage soup there's nothing wrong with eating it for a few days. You might want to check that it has enough fats, protein, and calories. If not adjust the recipe a bit. I find adding a little salted pork, pancetta, leftover ham or chicken to soups adds lots of flavor and a little extra protein and fat. It's not unusual for me to eat the same pot of soup once of twice a day for a week. If cabbage soup is not your favorite food eating less of the foods you love is just as good of a way to start.2 -
I'd be jump-kicking some friends and loved ones out of frustration if I went on a cabbage soup diet.2
-
I just googled the diet. I would most definitely die eating what is says to eat. Not a big veggie fan, I don't like cabbage, that much beef would make me vomit. So I could eat fruit and the one weekly baked potato but I don't like baked potatoes. Only mashed. So I could have the butter, the fruit, and the water. But apparently not on the same day. I would most definitely die.0

I appreciate everybody's input. I personally love cabbage soup especially when I can't go #2 regularly it really helps.3
