My SO and I bought ourselves some cheap flip-flops specifically to wear inside the apartment, because the floor is tile. Bare feet on tile get inexplicably nasty *really* quickly. Also, we have a cat. It's a 350sqft studio apartment, so no matter where the litterbox is, there's gonna be litter tracked basically everywhere. I personally hate the feeling of dirt/sand/particulate matter on my feet if I'm not on the beach. So, shoes on inside, but they're house slippers, so I don't know if that counts.

I used to always run around barefoot or in socks, then I became a cat owner. Stepping on a wet, juicy hairball just once teaches you that barefoot is NOT an option. Now I wear houseshoes (flip flops) around the house and have gotten so used to it that I couldn't imagine going barefoot.

NZ - shoes off if it is just me & my partner. Although he will often keep his on. We have mostly wood floors.

Shoes on if we are having a party (the floors will usually be washed afterwards anyway). And friends who have newly varnished wood floors requested shoes are taken off.

I once went to a party in the UK where people were asked to remove shoes - sadly one of them had particularly stinky feet - ROOM CLEARINGLY bad.

USA. I take my shoes off the second I get in the door, but not because of cleanliness but because I hate having shoes on. Everyone else leaves theirs on except my niece.

Off, I hate shoes and only wear them when I have to. When I was a kid I would run around outside with them off, we lived in the country. I still have my shoes off a lot of the time outside

Shoes off in the house is all very well until someone shatters a glass, and the tiny sandlike grains end up in unexpected places.

Flip-flops because we turned a commercial building/warehouse into a home and we have concrete floors.

OFF! I hate wearing shoes. That's the first thing to go when I get home...

I don't care about walking around the house with them on. Too much of a headache to me to remember and regulate my husband. He can barely keep his shoes off the couch, lol

    Off. Two reasons

    1) my parents always made me

    2) I lived in Japan for a while and because everything happens on the floor you never wear outdoor shoes on inside floors.

For me, if my shoes are on, I either just got home or am about to go out.

We always wore shoes in the house growing up. But when I got my own house (and new carpeting) we took them off. Now the only one who wears them in the house is my mom when she's visiting!

As an American when i was growing up it was normal to wear shoes in the house. in my 20's i had a roommate from Asia who asked if we could take our shoes off in the apartment. it didnt take long to see the benefits.

so all you dirty Americans who are still tracking dirt around your house. stop it! :D

and dont give me the "i wipe them on a mat" or something similar. that only takes care of so much.

so where do you live and what do you do with your shoes?

    USA/off
I've lived in the USA my entire life and I have known very few people who wore shoes around the house. Most of my family and friends' parents required that people remove their shoes at the door.

This isn't an "American" thing, though I know some Americans do prefer to keep their shoes on.

I take mine off every chance I get. I don't even wear them at work unless I have to walk far from my desk.

Off. This goes for close friend's homes, too, unless we're about to leave. In my experience, there aren't many people who leave their shoes on while inside.

I'm from Canton, Ohio originally. I didn't even put shoes on when I went outside. My mom wanted me to, but I would be gone before she noticed. The habit has translated in my adulthood as only wearing shoes when I have to. I take them off as SOON as I enter my house or anyone's house and don't put them on again until I have to go somewhere public. And even then I try to pick shoes that are easily slipped on and off and feel as light as possible.

As an American I spent all my life as shoes on until I spent an expat year in India where shoes off was non-negotiable. I mean each and every time I went into someone's house they would ask me to take my shoes off. Now that I'm back in the US I've held onto that custom. It seems to make sense to me.

I'm from the UK. There's nothing over here to say whether or not you take your shoes off or not - it's a matter of preference I guess. In my household, we take our shoes off - mainly because we have carpets. A lot of people I know have vinyl flooring, wood or stone and they tend to tell their guests to keep their shoes on - probably because the flooring gets very cold and dirty!
