Can't run for a month

Having some knee pain after running, read lots about it and tried a few things that just made it worse, so saw sports med/orthopod and was told I have to stop running for a month. Unfortunately it includes walking as well, and anything else that hurts. Apparently the swelling and pain in my knee was worse than I thought.

Knee didn't hurt (much--really almost nothing) so today I went bike riding for about 40 min or so, average pace 13 mph according to my speedometer and app on my iphone, and it said I burned about 161 calories (seems outrageously high compared to running) and I am not even tired after the bike ride!!

For those who had to switch from running/walking to something else, how has it affected your weight and how in the world can something that doesn't make me tired at all burn more calories than running.

For data purposes: 44 years (almost 45), 134 LBS, run 16 minutes covering 1.38 miles (round the block) with approx 134 calories burned (hard to talk, sweaty, typical pulse in the high 170's and tired afterwords). The bike ride today was about 5 miles, mostly flat, was NOT tired, never out of breath, no high heart rate. How can I get in shape and burn calories with that? How will I be able to go back to running after this (if I am allowed)?

Thanks!
