i have googled and googled and i just cannot fully wrap my head around how the hell rice's calories work.
i have a box of rice that says:
"Per 1/3 cup (30g)*.
Calories: 130"
"*1/3 cup (30g) of rice as prepared without the addition of butter, margarine, or salt."
can someone please tell me how the heck to prepare rice and get the calories right?
i want to make 1/2 a cup of rice (dry). how many calories will that be when it's cooked?

I would weigh my rice dry, find a USDA-based entry for the type of rice, and log it by weight.0

Weigh out 1/3 cup of dry rice, add water and cook. That is your rice calories. If you add butter, oil, or anything else to your rice, add those calories separately.0

i have no way of weighing, though.

3/3 (1 cup) is 390 calories. You want 1/2 cup...390 ÷ 2 is 195 calories.0

the best cheap money you can invest in your health is a little scale to weigh food out - weigh out 30g of rice into a container - that is one serving, cooking and then log additional toppings - i.e. if you add butter, log x grams of butter, x grams of cheese etc0 -
Cook the 1/3C dry rice and see what it measures once it's done. That amount of rice will be 130 cal. Now you know for future reference!
If you need more rice than that for a meal, you could also cook a multiple of 1/3C and do the math.0 -
Depending on the type of rice, raw, minute rice or uncle ben's parboiled you might see a difference in calories. I know normal long grain rice is around 100 per 1/2 cup cooked. 1/3 cup dry should yield around 1 cup (when cooking 2 cups water to 1 cup rice) which would be 200 calories cooked. I think the database shows 205 for 1 cup of most long grain white rice after being cooked.0
