Due to working night shifts for sooo long I'm now trying to get myself into a pattern to stop eating after 8pm.... but it's proving to be more difficult that expected

Why? Meal timing is irrelevant to weight loss. Does eating late give you heartburn or something?

I thought your metabolism slowed down of a night due to the body resting?
As iv always worked nights I'm finding it hard to not eat at all hours of the night / which I thought wasn't good for weight loss??

Op there are so many "diet" myths out there that keep getting repeated. I didn't know either until coming into this forum.

Best advice I can give is to read through these forums and stickies. I thought I knew, but boy was I wrong:).

Nope. I eat up to an hour before bed. That can be 12am, or even 1am. I like to save my calories for the end of the day. A calorie deficit is all that matters for weight loss.

Perhaps you could save the majority of calories for the evening/night? You don't have to stop eating at 12am either. I count my calories from the first time I eat in the day up until I go to bed.

It's yet another myth. Save some calories and have a night time snack. I lost, maintained, bulked, and cut doing this and it made no difference.

I suspect that eating at night is only bad if you eat all day as well! :)
Enjoy the rest of your calories without guilt.

Geez. This myth didn't even make my thread yet :)

Not poking fun at you Vons. Just there are so many myths out there and I think this is one of the tamer ones.

    @Tacklewasher it did make it.

Just in other words.. eating late at night (one said after 7pm) means food will automatically be stored as fat ;)

Read the thread I linked to above and if you want some more, read some of these
    http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/category/myths-nonsense/
The negative calorie list and the list of Superfoods are especially helpful :)

The toughest thing (I found) with weight loss was getting through all the *kitten* about it. And seems so much money can be made off of them, they really are prevalent and can be defended as much as those who think the Moon landing was a hoax.

I like this place because science and reality tend to win out over myths, scams etc.

Don't feel bad about that. There's a TON of myths floating around even these forums (funny enough, even in the "weight loss myth" thread). Unless you see data to support it, don't believe it.

In the case of late night eating, the story is more nuanced than simply "you shouldn't eat before bed". A big part of why that advice came into existence is more around the types of food people were eating and less about the actual hour they were. A "typical" snack for most people is something like potato chips, candy, sodas in an uncontrolled, unmoderated way. Aside from the extra caloric load, for some people, this can also lead to sleep problems, indigestion, sleep-disrupting urination urges, etc. Worse, is that most people are simply eating out of boredom, stress, or habit and if you're trying to take better care of yourself, these are not solid excuses to eat.

Here are a couple of resources on the subject:
    http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-truth-myth-eating-night-causes-weight-gain
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/why-eating-late-at-night-may-be-particularly-bad-for-you-and-your-diet/2015/08/24/ad8b85ac-2583-11e5-b77f-eb13a215f593_story.html

Personally, I avoid eating after 8pm simply for the practice of self-control. This isn't a hard rule, however. If I missed dinner, for example, I'm going to eat something. If I'm actually physically hungry, I'm going to eat something. I've found that controlling this has helped me form better night time patterns and in turn, has helped me get better sleep overall. That's just me, though. Remember, when it comes to these sort of things, there is no one right answer.

@Juvenall I agree with most of what you've posted. I'm not sure I agree as to why the advice came int existence, I do think it started as a simple my, but I'm not eating much late anymore and between that and losing a bunch of weight, I rarely have heartburn anymore. Could be more the weight loss, but it's working for me so I'm a lot more aware of late night eating. But that doesn't seem to be the case with Vons.
