Really DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)?

Hey all,
So I joined a gym the week before last and it's been going fairly well. My goal is to get up 3-4 visits to the gym per week, but I haven't been able to get anywhere close to that yet and here is why:
The first workout was a complementary session with a fitness instructor and a health, fitness, and nutrition assessment. It was really good to get my head in the game, and two days later I was back in the gym doing my own workout on Monday. I had intended to go the gym on Wednesday, but was still quite sore on the day. I had in mind to make up for missing the gym by going today, but again, my muscles were still aching quite badly so I knew even if I went I wouldn't be getting a good workout; furthermore I was afraid that I would have bad form on many of the strength exercises because of my muscle aches.
Now, because of the assessment I mentioned, I have improved my nutrition. I am vegetarian and I was worried that a lack of protein might compromise the efficacy of my strength training. Despite improved nutrition though, I've never been this put out by a work out. I exercised fairly regularly before I was a vegetarian and although I did get muscle aches, they never lasted as long as this most recent bout.
I'm wondering if any of you have experience prolonged muscle ache and if so, if and how you've managed to deal with; any information from vegetarians or vegans would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks guys!
Cheers,
James

It took me 10 days to recover from my first session with my trainer. Ten!
Ten days of yelping every time I had to sit on the toilet. Ten days of crawling up stairs on my hands and knees. 10 days of not wanting to lie still for too long lest I get stiff, but not wanting to move, either.
I think I gave myself a week to recover before I went full throttle again. After 3 or so days I did go to the gym to do some stretching and a light workout to get blood flowing, but other than that, I was down.
The good news is I've never had that level of pain again.
My suggestions would be an anti-inflammatory like Advil, warm baths, stretching, and getting they protein up somehow. I have a pathetically low protein intake, so I have to do shakes.
Good luck!0 -
Often times working through it is the best thing you can do to help it go away. As the above poster said.....Advil, hot baths in Epsom salt, foam rolling. These will all help with the discomfort.0

Push through it. Moving your muscles will help with DOMS. Advil or ibuprofen are anti inflammatories and can help as well. I've been vegetarian for the last seven years, and I haven't noticed any additional soreness after workout now than I did before I went vegetarian.0
