So tonight I used our fitness centres (in our apt bldg) Nautilus machine and I did 2 reps of 8 but how to you know what weight you are lifting..

It starts at 2 then 3, 5 so on....

If I have the pin at 3 am I lifting 3lbs or 5lbs? or is it i kg...??

TIA

P.S. can someone also recommend a site or book(s) that will help me design a program for training..I dont want to be all willy-nilly with it ~Thanks again

Hi there, those aren't silly questions at all! I think the numbers usually mean the amount (in pounds) you are using. I have a gym with similar equipment and it shows the weight (in lbs). Usually, though, the pins do not go as low as 3 or 5lbs, they usually start at around 10lbs, so your machine may be different. I'm sure someone on here will know! They always do!

Anyway, to answer the 2nd part of your question...I recommend reading Jillian Michaels' book, "Winning by Losing." It is an AMAZING book filled with lots of advice and has a strength training and cardio plan ALL ready for you! Read it! It's like 5-10 bucks at Target.

    Best of luck!

Thanks...No Target here but I may be able to pick it up at a bookstore inexpensively. I'll look around tomorrow as I really want to start adding this to my routine

Perhaps they are in kg or something.

That's a nuisance when it doesn't clearly state what they are.

Hi. I don't know about the weight machines but I recently borrowed from the library "The Ultimate Body: 10 Perfect Workouts for Women" by Liz Neporent and I liked it a lot. There are 10 separate workouts outline: A beginner/basic, Arms&Upper Body, Legs, Gym workout, and so on. Used copies are available on Amazon pretty cheap. Most of the workouts don't require much in the way of equipment, so perfect for me (no gym membership). I'm doing the basic/beginner workout and a bit of the Legs workout for now. I do other exercise & DVDs in addition to this.

Thanks...I'll have to see if they are adaptable to a machine..luckily the fitness centre is included in our rent, one of the reasons we picked this bldg...

BEST book, hands down, that I've read regarding putting together both a fitness training program (which includes strength training) AND a solid nutrition plan is Tom Venuto's "The Body Fat Solution: 5 Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscle, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining your Perfect Weight."

    oooh....found this is best.......http://www.ehow.com/video_4539841_maximize-nautilus-workout.html

Keep a log so you know what you lifted and how much, so you can increase as you go.

    Good luck!
