Fad Diets and general recommendations

Often times on myfitnesspal we get users asking about various diets such as one where you eat all bananas or one where you drink cayenne pepper and lemon juice daily.
I wanted to make a brief video to talk about whether or not diets like this are a good idea and why or why not? And if not, what's a reasonable alternative?

I find it hilarious that as I type this I'm wearing a traditional colored superman shirt and matching superman logo beanie hat. Lol6 -

As I've been flitting around with different eating "styles" or preferences because someone said it works...just trying to lose 20 stinkin' pounds after already losing 100 with JUST paying attention to the calories and being reasonable...this video jerked me back to reality. Thanks for being clear, intelligent and concise as that is what appeals to my inner monkey.
Bailing on the weirdness that I can't maintain for more than 6 days...going with what I can. Thank you.7 -
Not sure if they can, since I'm new here, but I think the mods should pin this topic. It's some good practical advice everyone should have.2

Watched the video-great information for beginners. I can only add that the vitamins and nutrients that one gets from food variety is good for overall health and energy. Some people just want to lose the weight at any cost, but not knowing what that cost can be long term. Be smart-be safe, and good luck to the new people on here.1

Hi I just started working out and I'm starting off slow by walking. I know diet and exercise is key in losing weight, so my question is have you heard of the Keto diet if so what is your thoughts?1

Keto is just a way of eating, you can lose, maintain or gain weight eating low carb. What seems to attract a lot of newbs to it as a way of eating is the initial weight drops, as you will drop a lot of water weight by restricting carbs, however for fat loss, it's no more successful than any other means of creating a calorie deficit.
The questions to consider are:- Do you like Carbs?
- Can you see yourself eating low carb for the forseeable future?
- Do you have a medical reason to restrict carbs?
The key to losing weight is creating a calorie deficit, you don't need exercise to lose weight (it's very good for your health but not necessary for weight loss). Making small changes to your diet over time is generally more sustainable than making drastic changes.9 -
You did this a year ago and I'm only seeing it now? Such great information with a ton of common sense, a must watch for everyone. Thanks SideSteel.4
