Crazy food myth i heard at work

I like to add the dressing to my salad and then close the container and shake it up to distribute the dressing. While doing this today, my coworker frantically said, "No, stop shaking your salad." Confused, I stopped and she immediately informed me that shaking my salad like that will bruise the vegetables and they will lose their nutritional value. I asked where she heard this from and she said she was pretty sure she heard that on Dr. Oz. I thanked her for the tip and then want back to shaking my salad. Oy

Also, if you break a cookie in half, all the calories will fall out!77

Yeah the nutrients fall through the gaps on your fork12

I swear people are just getting more and more stupid...from a logic standpoint, it doesn't even make sense.24

This is just funny. I am willing to bet though that you use less salad dressing by shaking it and getting it on everything than the opposite of drenching the salad and stirring it to coat the salad.
So, I would be willing to risk bruising and battering my veggies and losing a minimal amount of nutrients than over using my dressing and adding another 50 calories or so to my salad.4 -

So THAT'S why people won't buy the bruised apples at the store! All the keep-the-doctor-away-ness will have leaked out.
Oh boy10 -
You should have just stared at her with a blank look on your face.
That is so ridiculous!3 -
just more proof that Dr Oz is the master charlatan of our generation ....4

That's hilarious!
Someone should tell those NutriNinja people. They think liquifying perfectly good food into disgusting slop "unlocks" the nutrients and makes it MORE nutritious.10 -

The other day I was bemoaning the lack of non fat free yogurt at the store and told my husband that fat is good for the brain and the rise in the number of stupid people is due to too many people eating fat free foods. I was joking at the time but now every time I read something stupid I wonder how much fat the person gets in his/her diet.32 -
I can almost see the thought behind it. You should be gentle with produce as it can bruise and potentially spoil earlier than it might have.
But not if you're going to eat it immediately after!6 -

Yeah, this. I wonder if that's essentially what the co-worker heard/saw/read and misinterpreted/misapplied it.3 -

It's not any worse than Googling tackle washer.

But where do the nutrients supposedly go when the produce gets bruised? Do they just disappear? Do they fall off the veggies and get stuck to the bowl? Do they evaporate? I'm so confused.9

This post really made my day. Laughing at all the comments as I type this. I hate Dr. Oz. Most other dietitians feel the same way. He's such a snake-potion charlatan and I'm constantly correcting people and their crazy logic. Don't get me started on alkaline water. Please!
I'm saddened and amazed how gullible people can be when they're desperate. My coworker kept asking me to "make her a diet to lose weight". After many months of telling her to track her food and increase her activity, which she didn't accept or want to do, I finally made something up just to see her reaction.
I told her she needs to eat only long, skinny things and she will be tall and thin (i.e. Chinese long beans, carrots cut into thin strips, chicken and turkey julienne style, etc). I told her not to eat grapes, or tomatoes, or melons because they are round and they will make HER round.
She really thought I was serious, guys! OMG, really??? Of course I told her it was a joke, but she kept asking me if cantaloupe will make her rounder.
I stopped giving her nutrition advice, even though I'm a Registered Dietitian. People want to believe what they want. The scary thing is when they start sharing this stupid info or have a nationwide tv show.38 -

LOL
I do get a bunch of fishing sites (which is what I mean by being a tacklewasher)2 -
If you didn't eat it for 2 days and all the bruise spots turned to yuk, it might be a problem. But eating it right away is fine!1
