Protein: whey or Casien?

Hi :) I want to lose weight (fat) while keeping as much lean muscle as possible. Which is a better source of protein for that, whey or casein?

    Chicken.

    Just eat sufficient protein from good sources and do resistance training. If you eat enough food sources, you won't need a powder at all (although if you struggle, there is nothing wrong with supplementing)

    Thanks :) I currently drink whey because I it's quicker and easier than cooking chicken breast

    Both have advantages and disadvantages. On a basic level it's going to come down to the time and circumstances that you plan on consumption.

    The slow digestion of casein can be seen as a negative before or after training when you're trying to get amino acids into your system. Due to this it's recommended use is at meal times or before bed.

    The fast absorption of whey would prove to be more beneficial to consume around the time you workout (either pre, during or after).

    That being said, neither of these should be a substitute on proper nutrition.

    Thank you very much. I get the bulk of my protein from proper food so I use the powder as a supplement. I was just wondering if casien might be more beneficial.

    Whey is cheaper and is more bio available plus is better at stimulating protein synthesis but not so much as maintaining it. If it's just to reach your protein goals Id go with the cheaper alternative

    I tend to either mix the two, or use milk protein concentrate/isolate, as those are the normal ratio of proteins found in milk (roughly 20% whey, 80% casein).

    Neither is inherently better (or worse). Casein in general has less carbs so is lower calorie in my experience.

    I've found casein to be slightly higher carb, but with almost nonexistent fat, which whey concentrate tends to have a bit of. Isolates are a totally different story though, obviously.

    If you want to maintain muscle, then the bigger drivers are going to be having a solid progressive overload lifting program and overall good protein intake (~.8-1g per lb of lean body mass). If you want to supplement with a whey, then you can look at the ratings on www.labdoor.com for a quality one.
