Hot Cocoa

Baby it's still cold outside! At least where I live and it makes me crave warmth of all kinds...soup, hot sandwiches, and of course hot cocoa. I made some yesterday figuring homemade hot cocoa mix would be healthier, only I didn't realize my mix has about 35 grams of sugar! Does anyone know of a healthier recipe?

If you're not afraid of fake sugar (which there's no reason to be)
Fill a cup with water and add:
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
5 grams sugar free vanilla powdered creamer
Vanilla extract
4 packets of equal
Pinch of salt
It's 50 calories and no sugar!

I just substitute sucralose for sugar in recipes that call for sugar. Except, not for yeast dough recipes since the yeast eat the sugar.1

I love hot cocoa in the wintertime and I just buy low calorie Swiss Miss packets (the light ones, not the low sugar ones which actually have more calories/sugar!). One packet is 25 calories and I mix it with hot water and then add 0 calorie Davinci syrups (raspberry and caramel are my favorites). Sometimes I also add 25 calories of whipped cream, or a splash of peppermint Schnaps
eta: just checked and one packet has 25 calories, 4 grams of carbs/2 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein.4 -
I use 2 tbsp of stevia with a generous serving of cocoa powder and some unsweetened cashew milk. Amazing, I also add some peppermint extract0

I second this recommendation. I go big sometimes and have a large mug with 2 packs. I add a splash of milk to mine. Comes out to 60 calories.1 -
I just do the regular Swiss Miss hot chocolate - 90 calories. When we come in from walking the dog on a cold winter night, it is bliss.1

I use Swiss Miss, too, but the no sugar added version. I find the regular Swiss Miss too sweet and I found the light ones didn't mix as well as the others. 60 calories per 16 gram serving.0

Unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar substitute, almond milk. Simple and good.0

I used to do the sugar-free packets. Fairly low in calories. I prefer to make room in my budget for my Abuelita and milk. Much more satisfying.0

I boil 1 1/2 cups of water on the stove and add a scoop of this to it:
100 calories, 0 grams sugar, 20 grams protein, and absolutely delicious.0 -
A smaller portion? 200 grams whole milk, 6 grams of sugar, 10 grams of cocoa has around 15 grams of sugar.1

I want the chocolate smell/taste and not the sugar so I use raw cacao powder. I mix some into my coffee to get a chocolate/coffee taste that I love. No sugar and pretty low in calories for the teaspoon or so I add.
I also add cacao powder to plain yogurt to get some chocolate flavor without a bunch of sugar.0 -
Chocolate tea, like Yogi's Mayan Chocolate spice is a good alternative too. 0 calories, unless you add a little creamer to it.0

3 Qt package Carnation (dry) milk
1/2 C unsweetened cocoa
1 C Splenda
1 pkg. sugar free chocolate pudding mix
1/4 C non-dairy creamer

Bone Broth Protein... Does it have a taste/smell? ? I keep seeing this on here.
It tastes and smells like a combination of cocoa and stevia extract. The collagen in it gives it a creamy mouthfeel, which is nice compared to a lot of diet hot chocolates, which come across as watery to me. They actually use dehydrated chicken bone broth concentrate to source the protein, so it's pretty tasteless and flavorless in it's own. They make an Apple Cinnamon one that tastes just like hot apple cider, too!1 -
I brew a cup of coffee with half coffee and half chocolate flavored Teecchino and add 1 T of hot cocoa powder, which has 5.5 grams of sugar.
- If I stop there I add 1 t sugar, which provides 4 grams of sugar.
- However, usually I add a scoop of chocolate protein powder, which has 7 grams of sugar, and skip the 1 t of sugar.
So my total is 9.5 or 12.5 g of sugar.

Do they sell that bone broth thing in small containers so I could try it? It's over $60 Cdn on Amazon and I'm a pretty picky person but it sounds interesting.0

Swiss miss simply cocoa... 90 calories for the packet. I see no reason to mess with the perfection that is hot chocolate by putting in sugar substitutes. I just budget for it. It's worth it.0

They make single-serve packets of the chocolate, vanilla, tumeric, and plain. If you bought them on Amazon, they'd probably by sold as a box of six pouches.0 -
Dark rum or creme de cacao are excellent additions.0
