When on holiday.....

This year, our family has 2 trips planned already. The first (this weekend) is a long weekend in Las Vegas (we are Southern US folks). The second is a trip I have planned for over a year and saved for many: two weeks in Italy.

How do you handle your food and exercise choices when on holiday?

I plan to walk more and watch what I am eating...just not to the degree I do in my 'everyday' life. Any other hints on how to not completely blow things when vacation time arises?

I've always lost weight on vacation, because I eat good meals instead of grazing mindlessly.

I lived in Italy for four months! I actually lost weight while I was there. Take my advice, just walk everywhere and you'll be fine. The largest city is Rome (where I lived) and for the most part you can walk to every major tourist attraction. The other cities are smaller and you can walk everywhere once in the city center. The food portion sizes are small in Italy, and half the reason one goes to Italy is to eat, so I'm going to encourage you to eat what you want knowing that you'll walk off more than usual, and the portion sizes are WAY smaller than a US plate. Have such a great time!

It might not be the most popular option here, but I basically eat whatever I gorram want on holiday, and drink all the beer.

But in the two weeks or so prior to the holiday, I "bank" ~200 calories a day, and do the same for a week or so after. It generally balances out over those weeks so I'm eating at about maintenance for that period.

When I'm o vacation, I'm way more active than I am when home and sitting behind a desk for 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week. I've never gained actual weight (fat) when on vacation...actually, I usually lose weight. I spent 10 days in Colombia, South America last May and ate plenty of local cuisine (which is part of the experience for me) and drank copious amounts of beer...we were also on the move most of the time, most days...I lost about 3 Lbs in 10 days.

When on holiday I normally come home weighing more. In experience it is water weight caused by high sodium food and the heat.

Like others above, I am fairly active when abroad and try to eat moderate amounts!

Portion sizes in Italy are way smaller than US however you're meant to eat many more courses. I never do when I go to Italy. Eat what I want when I want. Walk everywhere. Maybe have a swim if you have a hotel with a pool.

Try not to worry. It's your holiday, enjoy it. Italy is gorgeous and the food is amazing. You've been saving for years just enjoy it :-) two weeks won't undo alllll the hard work you've done.

I went to America with my partner a few years ago ordered a nachos appetiser for 1 between us, and no joke it could have fed 6 people. American portion sizes are crazy! Tasty though! Haha
