Hi everyone,

My mom is scheduled to have knee replacement surgery. I'm concerned because she is overweight. She has lost maybe 20 pounds since she has started making changes in her eating. I'm curious as to if there have been others on here who had this surgery while being overweight. If so, how was the process? How long did it take to recovery? Did you feel any relief?

My grandma was overweight and had both done at the same time, and she bounced back really quickly. I'm not sure about the specifics or if she feels any better or not.

    Two anecdotal stories.

First, my sister is very overweight and had knee problems. Doc of course recommended weight loss, but she opt'd for Cortisone, which was a great temporary fix and she should have take the new found mobility time to exercise, but the Cortisone wore off and she ended up having surgery. Of course, that fixed the current pain, but she is now having further issues because of the weight.

Before I lost a bunch of weight I was also having knee issues and was diagnose with degenerative arthritis. Of course I could get shots or they mentioned surgery. I took it upon myself to lose weight, start exercising to strengthen my knee, and I haven't had many problems or any pain since.

For every pound of weight you lose it accounts for around 4 pounds of impact weight on knees. With that, people who are overweight will never have a good solution for quality of life where knees are concerned. They may get temporary fixes but the weight will continue to degree the joint.

Thanks. She's been losing weight for about two months now, but her knee is making it difficult for her to walk right now. I definitely agree with you and thanks for sharing

My grandma had double knee replacement. She is overweight and is just as bad as she went in because she doesn't exercise. If she gets them done, she HAS to exercise, even just walking or it would be a waste of time effort and money.
