Weight loss is simply about consuming less energy (calories) than you expend. You burn calories 24/7...your energy expenditure for merely existing is considerable...then you expend energy going about your day to day...exercise expenditure is generally small relative to your existence and day to day...
I wouldn't recommend it, but you can lose weight without any exercise whatsoever. Regular exercise simply increases your energy expenditure to whatever degree. One can lose weight, maintain weight, and gain weight with regular exercise...the difference between the three weight management objectives is calories consumed...If I exercise on the regular and I require, say, 2800 calories to maintain my weight...if I eat 3200 calories consistently, I will gain weight regardless of the fact that I'm exercising...if I consume roughly 2,800 calories, I will maintain weight...if I consume fewer than 2,800 calories I will burn body fat to make up for the energy deficiency.
While I do advocate for a healthy and balanced diet consisting largely of whole foods, eating "clean" means nothing unless your calories are in order. There are plenty of "clean" whole foods that are very nutritious, but are also calorie bombs. I eat a diet consisting largely of whole foods and I've maintained my weight for going on four years save for about 10 Lbs I've gained over the last six months while nursing and injury...I also gained those 10 Lbs eating what most people would consider pretty "clean"...it all still comes down to calories in and calories out.5 -
That is impossible to say. Going to the gym and eating "clean" are both not required for weight loss. You just need to be eating in a calorie deficit.4

I think the basic recommendation is 30 minutes of activity per day, whether it's walking, biking, working out, whatever. When I go to the gym, it takes me anywhere from an hour to 1 1/2 hours depending on the routine that day and whether I can get machines without waiting.
Oh, and "eating clean' doesn't really mean anything. If it makes you motivated and feel better, great. But there is no real definition of clean eating. You only need to eat in a calorie deficit and eat foods that satiate you.3 -
For weight loss all you need is a calorie deficit. No exercise required.
For health - I suppose it depends on your goals to determine if that is enough...0 -
For health the recommendation is 45 minutes of moderate to strenuous activity 5 days a week. That isn't necessary to lose weight, but it will make you feel better, look better and be healthier over the long term. It is also very helpful if you want to maintain weight loss after you have gotten down to your goal weight.0
