Why won't it let me enter the number of minutes I performed an exercise?

What type of exercise? Only cardio exercises use minutes, like walking, elliptical or swimming. Specific strength exercises, like bicep curls, squats, use reps/sets & weight.1

When I am doing my weight lifting workouts, I just create my own entry into the cardio area and just track that way.1

Sounds like you may be using the strength training area which is just for tracking reps/weight and such. Go to Cardio - search "strength training" and then log your minutes. Of course this is assuming you're trying to get calories for strength training. Just be aware the calories probably won't be at all accurate since it is very hard to actually calculate calories burned strength training but if you just want extra calories that's how it is done.0
