But you're still in a calorie deficit. I don't count calories and can lose weight not counting calories but I don't do keto. Keto is just a way of controlling calories...there are many ways.
Also, IMO it would be a miserable existence.6 -
If i don't count calories I'll be back at my original weight3

Can I have wine if I go keto?

If I eliminate enough foods (that I like to eat).....then I lose weight. The problem with that is losing weight is just the first step.
Eating keto temporarily & losing weight doesn't "cure" me. When I go back to my regular foods.....I still have the same problem I started with. Counting calories shows me realistic portion sizes.
I have zero interest in eating keto forever.5 -
Happy for you and may it continue. However, the reason for the negativity is that it's difficult to sustain (for most), and newbies need to know that. There are people that don't count and lose just the same--it's not the majority though. Then there are fitness buffs on here that are watching their macros, especially protein, and count to make sure they get enough, along with eating what they like. Just so you know, there are people that gain on keto. Best.3

I've lost weight without counting calories in the past, but find it more fun to count (and to count macros and other things). Similarly, I've lost weight without weighing or measuring, but find that fun too. I am not sure why not counting is supposed to be some kind of huge bonus, but congrats on the weight loss. Lots of people around here have lost lots, so you are finding others who are similar in that way.0

Many of us prefer moderated diets over restrictive ones. Also, I'm a numbers and data guy, so counting calories is fun for me. Doing so has also taught me about portion control, which is a vital skill to master as I approach maintenance. And finally, I simply love refined carbs too much to limit or restrict them completely. As a Japanese American, I basically have a pot of cooked white rice on the kitchen counter 24/7, and there's no way I'd ever dream of giving that up. But hey, do what works for you.3

Keto is not magic. Calories in vs Calories out is absolute. If you haven't been counting calories then you have been eating less than your maintenance calories. If keto works for you, that's great. But don't spread lies that you don't need to count calories. You can still get fat off 4,000 cals of prime rib and bacon every day.4

Congratulations on your weight loss.
Keto macros wouldn't work for me personally, since I don't find fat satiating. An abundance of fat in my diet also has unpleasant effects on my digestion.
I'm a data nerd, and enjoy collecting data on a lot of aspects of what I'm doing to keep healthy. Counting calories is just one piece of the puzzle. There are others.
You do you. I'll keep eating my varied diet that's lost me 94 pounds and enjoying the healthy habits I've established in reinventing myself at 54 years old from a former couch potato to a running buff who likes to lift weights as well.6 -
Congrats, but Keto isn't for everyone.2

Yeah, nope.1

No gallbladder and a high fat diet? I would end up pooping forever. I think I'll pass.5

I'd need to buy shares in antacids. Me and high fat, no bueno. I think I'll stick with calorie counting.1

You can call it whatever you like, but the bottom line is always eating less calories than you burn.3

Congrats on your loss. I lost 65 pounds and did not go Keto. I'm not interested in it at all. For me it is too restrictive and complicated. I think I'll stick to moderating my portions by counting calories.2

I did keto shortly after joining this site. Sadly I gained weight on keto. I'm one of those people who can manage to eat tons of meat. Add in cheese and I was WAY over my TDEE. Keto isn't magic, but it can help some people reduce calories enough to lose weight. It's great you found a way to not count calories and lose weight, but it still comes down to calories and if you counted them for a few weeks you would see that.0

Keto/low carb wasn't for me. Too high in fat and not good for my IBS...0

Congratulations, but I guarantee you that all those calories were eaten at a deficit.
Literally counting calories is irrelevant. Stay within your calorie deficit to lose weight and it works every single time irrespective of diet type.1 -
