Hello I have lost the SAME 30 pounds over and over again all of my adult life! I am 57 now, and I had been doing pretty well over the last few years, incorporating a 5X a week jogging routine. I felt great! But then I started to get serious hip pain and lo and behold, I need a hip replacement surgery and jogging is out for me. Feeling sorry for myself, I am eating my feelings and I have gained most of it back yet again! How do you maintain the weight loss through life's ups and downs? I need experienced maintainers help. Thank you!

I cannot give you maintenance advise. I am 53, and used to love running, now I can't (my ankles are swollen and painful, doctors say old age, I call BS). I have a terrible time staying on track, so I will be checking back on this post to see what other people come up with. Any X-runners out there?

Welcome to MFP. :) I'm not a runner, but a friend of mine that is had to have hip replacement. She started to adjust how she ate (and drank) to reduce calories while she couldn't be as active. She increased veggies even more to make sure she felt full. Then after the doctor released her to exercise again, she started just with walking and built back up. It was a long process, probably 6 months. Hang in there and take it a day at a time.

It is hard maintaining. Who are these magic women who walk around saying "I used to be 20 stone and lost it all"? And keep it off!! I wish I knew their secret.

I use to be a runner but after a knee replacement I switched to swimming and cycling depending on the season. I do miss the simplicity of just going for a run.
