Discrepency in Calories burned on Ellipticals

At the Y, I use both the Octane Fitness Elliptical and another one...Fitness something. I workout much harder with the Fat Burner program on the Octane Fitness, and it says I burn about 250 calories for 30 minutes. With the other one, Fitness something, the Fat Burn isn't as intense, but for 30 minutes it says I am burning 350 calories. That's a huge discrepency. Calculators online using my weight (174) and age (40) come in saying about 250 calories burned in 30 minutes....which is more accurate, and WHY is there such a huge discrepancy?

some machines will weigh you and calculate calorie burn. other machines don't weigh you so just produce a figure.

It's all estimation...measuring energy expenditure is in no way some exact thing...be conservative.

SO is it safe to say it's 250 calories burned? I don't eat back my calories at this point, but do like to keep track of them.
