Hey guys.
I need advice.
I've always been an avid gym goer. I've lost a couple of tone over a couple of years. I do have muscle.
I put a little weight on over Xmas. Was training sporadically but didn't stop.
Back to eating healthy and training after nye and I've lost a good few pounds. But why am I gaining now when I'm sticking to 1300 cals a day. I have a good mix of food and I also eat some of my exercise cals and when I complete my food diary it always says with what I'm eating and exercising I should be loosing.
I k ow your all going to tell me it's muscle. But bleeugggghhhhhh why are us women so obsessed with the weight!!!!
Frustrated!
Any advice is welcome. X

What's the time period over which you have been eating 1300 calories? Remember that women experience weight fluctuations due to our hormones. That's in addition to normal weight fluctuations that happen to everybody. In general, weight fluctuations can happen at ovulation and right before your period. If you have a textbook 28 day cycle that means you can see it every 2 weeks. It's better to compare weights taken on the same day of each cycle (e.g., Day 1 vs Day 1, not Day 1 Vs Day 8.)

    Thanks MeganAM89 and jemh.
I've not eaten any foods with a high salt content. I try and eat as clean as possible and I've even cut carbs out of my evening meal as I don't get to eat till late.
I do have about 4 days of my pill left before my period next weekend. I've never noticed a fluctuation in my weight a week before. Normally a couple of days before.
My friend says I need play the waiting game, carry on and stop weighing myself.

It'll be water weight if you've switched up your gym routine (your muscles retain pounds of water for repair) and are logging faithfully and accurately, don't sweat it (no pun intended) and give it a few weeks for your body to readjust. :)

Also get out the tape measure the scale can be inaccurate short term, especially when you've changed things and rarely shows linear progress.

I'm voting water weight as it is close to your period .

Oh, and eating clean does not necessarily cause weight loss. All one needs is a calorie deficit. I personally go loosely by the 80/20 rule, but very loosely. All I di is make sure I hit my protein, fibre and iron and let the rest fall where it may... I also eat chocolate, chips and other so called "junk food".

And there is no need to stop eating carbs at night, either.

If you've gone back to a more strenuous program it's probably water weight. I'll always gain a little weight after going back to my routine after a rest day or two. I tend to work out to failure, or until I just can't do any more, so the next day I'll see an up-tick in weight almost assuredly. If I keep working out for a few days it'll settle and go down, but then another rest day and after that it'll go right back up. Sodium is another factor, but even if I can keep that under control, if I do a really tough workout my muscles retain water for repair, as do most people's. I'm a guy and I see the gains from water weight frequently, so I'd imagine women have that issue even more often. Some may be muscle, but it takes a really long time to build muscle, so you're not going to see even a pound of real muscle gain in that short amount of time unless you're on steroids of some sort. At least that's my opinion, I'm no expert. Feel free to correct me if anyone has a different opinion.

I'm confused. You say you're gaining. But then you say that since NYE you lost a few pounds. That is less than a month ago. Are you losing or gaining?

My suspicion is that you've had one weighin that was an increase, and you're in a panic. You can relax - that does not mean you are gaining. Losing weight is about 'over time'. Not each individual scale read. The increase is probably water weight.

What do you mean by gaining? How much? Over what amount of time?

I'm not going to tell you it's muscle because it's not muscle, which is intentionally build under intentional circumstances. :)

You've lost weight, and weight loss is never linear.

I have this funny feeling in my tummy that what you are experiencing is water retention and/or natural weight fluctuations.

In case I am wrong, you need to reevaluate calories eaten against calorie burned to find your logging errors.

So you lost weight after New Years. Okay.
But why am I gaining now when I'm sticking to 1300 cals a day.
Gaining "now"...meaning, when? Did you lose for 2 weeks and gain it back? Or what, exactly? You need to be specific if you want people to understand your issue and respond appropriately.
