P90X and Lifting for girls?

My apologies if there are already a million links but I feel at a bit of a loss for knowing where to start. After a round of Insanity a d regular HIIT classes I feel the need to branch out into some strength work. We have p90X at home anyway but was wondering thoughts and tips for lifting heavy at the gym.
I presume you don't start too heavy and you build up but how often should you be going for instance, also do I need extras in way of protein shakes and how many reps is considered low reps?

Learn as much as you can about lifting. Buy/read Starting Strength, 5/3/1, or New Rules of Lifting for Women/Life. Watch Youtube videos or hire a trainer to learn proper form. Start out with an unloaded bar and progress slowly each workout session. Make sure you rest adequately.0

I'm currently doing Les Mills Pump and I highly recommend it. It's a 90 day program like P90X, and the bar and weights come with the program.0

People use protein shakes to help them reach their protein goals.
I personally do Stronglifts 5x5. I lift 3x a week on this program.

I've also had great results with P90X. That said, I'm going to try new rules of
Weight lifting for women next. It seems more efficient than P90X & takes a LOT less time0
